Colonel John Douglas

Samuel Douglas, former plantation owner in Jamaica, died Charleston, SC, 1799, refers in his will to one of his Executors as, "Colonel John Douglas of one of the Bahamas Islands", and I wonder if anyone may have information on the Colonel.                                                 Samuel, the founder of the 'Douglas Free School' in Newton Stewart, Scotland, mentions in his will his first cousin, Sir William Douglas of Castle Douglas and his siblings, together with  other relations. However, one of Sir William's siblings, John, is the only one not mentioned and I'm wondering if there may be a connection? Unfortunately, I have no information on John, other than he would have been born in the parish of Penninghame, Wigtownshire, Scotland, to John Douglas and Mary Heron, with his date of birth in the years1749 to 1759.

A long shot but any information would be appreciated.

Amongst the Names of Loyalist Settlers and Grants of Land Which They Received from the Bahamian Government:
1778 - 1783 DOUGLAS, John, 50 1/2 acres, Nassau, N. P.,
which does not take us very much further forward.

have you done the search in archives and history, genealogy , , I was searching James Douglas / son John Douglas and I came across this Colonel John ; so he's there in case you hadn't looked

Thanks, Jackie.  I had a look at Col. John but he is too early at 1636-1778, providing I'm looking at the same man!

I think I came across 2 of them! just scroll until you see the dates

the one I've printed out because I have a James then a son John b 1708 I am printing off possibilities!

so did you see the John St Leger (of Baads) Douglas/ (F3931) one ?

it has Col  John St Leger (of Baads) Douglas 1682-1783

I'm sure I saw another one too

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
