The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I am helping research/care for the Douglas Vault at Kilmun.  The Directors of the Kilmun Mausoleum Trust are raising money to renovate the Argyll Mausoleum that houses some of the Dukes of Argyll.  We would like to trace descendants of the family in the Douglas vault to see if a key is available and if some agreement can be achieved about repair/renovation.

In it are buried General Sir John Douglas his wife Lady Elizabeth and Charles Douglas their son.  Their descend from Archibald Douglas B 1778 who is buried in the Lairds Grave at Ardentinny.  This family apparently descend from soap boilers in Leith who in turn descend from the Douglases of Cruixton (Crookston) north of Galashields who descend from the Douglases of Glenbervie.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I hope I have posted this correctly

I am hoping that we might, at some stage, be able to form a Clan Douglas Heritage Trust which would be able to encourage and support activities such as the renovation of the Kilmun Masoleum.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
