The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Apologies if there is already a discussion about this, please feel free to direct me in the right direction if there indeed is.

Is there any info available about Douglases in Caithness? Some very targeted DNA analysis carried out on my brothers YDNA has revealed that we originate from this area. I am now keen to underhand more about the history of the Douglases in this region. thanks in advance,

Rina,

There are a number of posts about Caithness here.  If you plug ' Caithness ' into the search box, top right, you should find them.

Likewise in the main section of the Douglas Archives.  Also in the genealogy database (Places search)

Your DNA findings are interesting!  DNA is not my area of expertise, but it would be good to be able to link those connections.  There is only one in the DouglasDNA project:

My research has been piecemeal, and it would be good to tie some of it together.  My thinking is that there are two key elements to the Douglases arrival in Caithness.  The first seems to be the marriage of Egidia Douglas to the 2nd earl of Orkney and Elizabeth to the 3rd earl.  Did they bring a Douglas retinue?

Later arrivals were the shepherds, brought in the look after the sheep that replaced those who emigrated - forcefully or otherwise.  Some of those families also emigrated.

You could start a Caithness group, and invite the others to join, thus sharing research experiences...

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
