The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

In looking for my douglas side they were pretty good at having kids and when they did decide to come to Canada all were fairly grown up. The thing James MOffat Douglas wrote about when they set the post office up for the town that followed had the name of the hills they boys remembered when growing up Tantallon is the name of the town that followed there set up. All the births indicate a different town or farm or parish they were on, did familiys move often in the 1800 to 1830 years.? While they remained close around Roxburgh there were several other parish's where the birth's were mentioned.

I have added 5 biographies this morning - all Canadian. One of these was for James Moffat Douglas.

In these, I do notice a lot of moving around.

Tantallon is, of course, the name of the Douglas stronghold in Scotland.
yes and James Moffat
Douglas started a town with a couple of sons and daughters called Tantallon Sask Canada named from where they grew up. MY Janet was the closest sib to James they remained close. Re moving around was meant family in Scotland, three kids including my Janet were born in different parishes, farms/ towns, wondered what life must of been like then and was this common during that time when things were difficult in Scotland.I will get you specifics on Janet.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
