Hello - I think I can give you a lead re Margaret Jane Storey. Source 1 - Marriage cert 19/9/1880 John James Douglass 21 yrs 39 Henry Street Sunderland, occupation grocer, [father James Main Douglass, carver], and Margaret Jane Storey 20 yrs 1 D'arcy Street Sunderland Parish of Hendon Bishopwearmouth, [her father Thomas Storey (deceased) occupation grocer]. Witnesses James Main and Robert Douglass. MA872686.

Source 2 Census 1881 39 Henry Street East James M Douglass age 47, carver & turner & glider, wife Mary 43, son Robert 20 blacksmith (my ancestor), son Edward 18 printer & compositor, son Thomas 16 boilermaker, dau Jane 9, Mary 7, James 4, nephew James 16 printer & compositor.

At birth of James 29 Mar 1859 they lived 4 Wear Street Bishopwearmouth. John James Douglass suffered from a debilitating motor neurone disease which eventually paralysed him. the last 9 years of his life were spent in Mrs Sheerlies Nursing Home at Mile End. He is buried at Ardrossan.

Margaret Jane Storey's parents were Thomas Storey 30 at marriage 1 May 1858 and Jane Graham, 25. He - grocer, she - dressmaker. Jane Graham's father George Graham, Labourer. Thomas' father not shown. Residence at time of marriage: "Danshead Parish of Stapleton/ Kirkcambeck" Registration Brampton, Parish of Lanercost (?) County of Cumberland.

Notes in the old Douglass book I have show Census 1881 for John J Douglass at 21 Gill Bridge Ave Bishopwearmouth. John J and Margaret Jane travelled steerage on Oroya arriving SA 20 May 1890. The book I have shows John J's descendants, if this is of interest to you.

Re James Main Douglass 1834 father - everyone believes it is James M born either 1809 or 1813. Like everyone, I have found nothing. The only extra clue is that Mary Geraldine Douglass was a witness to the marriage of James Main to Mary Lightly on 26 Feb 1857... Apologies if you already had some of the above information.

I would be interested to know which 'old Douglass book' you are referring to.  does it have anything on the douglases in South africa/  This is an area about which we have little detail.

Hello - I, too, have come across mention of Africa - the name Benjamin rings a bell ... the book does not cover anyone in Africa, really only focussing on SA. One branch was in Chile - Mary Douglass born 22 april 18?? - probably born between Robert Maynard 1860 and James Main 1877. Mary 'Polly' married Jack Hedley and had two dau Mildred and Doris 1903 and a son Wilfred (solicitor in Rotherham). Family lived for a time in Valparaiso, Chile. Jack worked for Hong Kong Electric Co. Mildred married, possibly in Chile. Doris in 1944 was aged 41, unmarried, living at 37 Westwick Road Sheffield England.

The Book is "Douglass Book" 1st edition November 1990 (A4 copies, "officeworks" binding) written by Barbara Sopp. Front page says to write to "Douglass Book" at 8 Elizabeth Street Eastwood 5063, 36 Central Avenue Magill 5072, 35 Thomas St Seacliff Park 5049 or 15 Devon St North Goodwood SA 5034. Kevin Douglass and his daughter Ruth get an acknowledgement for word processing. Clues for you to get a book may be Barbara and Max Sopp's children: Gregory b 1958 accountant who in 1990 lived in Unley; Janet (Hughes) in Adelaide in 1990; Anthony Sopp 1963 living in Unley in 1990.
