A collection of historical and genalogical records
I am working in Ancestry.com on my ancestors from Scotland and have reached an impasse. I have reached an ancestor named Sir William Douglas The Bold (1243 - 1298) who is said to have died in the Tower of London or Sir William Douglas of Hermiston (1243 - 1300). I have found conflicting information about a son, James Douglas. Some sites point to this James as The Black Douglas (1286-1330) and some point to James Douglas of Hermiston (1280-1323). In the records I have seen both have Elizabeth Stewart as mother. Does anyone know the difference between these 2 James?
Never mind - I figured it out. Different fathers.
I was a bit slow in getting the answer to you!
Thanks anyway! I may have more questions. I had an uncle named William Douglas and a father George. Those names seem to have come down over the centuries!
Handing down names from generation to generation makes keeping track hard - but sometimes the name pattern can be helpful in linking previously unrecognised family connections.
