Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
All areas of Douglas history and genealogy are of interest to me.
I am keen to track back family lines that are considered 'brick walls', and hope to be able to do this through the networking opportunities that arise through media such as this.
As I know very little about the Deacon William and his family, I am very eager to learn more. I am searching for his grandaughter Elizabeth Douglas who married Stephen Dewolfe, and then married Henry Rowland. I have found a chart that she died 1705 not possible as the same notation stated her Dewolfe children born 1706 and 1708, also another that she died 1747. I am at presently reading the histories of the villages of colonical Connecticut for any reference to the families.
My G Grandfather was James Douglas (b1832-?). I think he was a carpenter. His first wife was Elisabeth MacDonald(b1830 - d1870); & they had 7 children ; Jane b1855; Margaret b1857; John b1860; James b1861-d1922;Alexander b1862; Sophia b1864; Robert b1867 . His second wife, my G Grandmother was Christina Fletcher (1843 -?). They had 3 children Janearina b1878, Justin b1881 & Edward Simpson b1885-d1956, my grandfather. He married my grandmother Helen Cameron & he was a professional golfer who migrated to New Zealand where he raised his family, 2 daughters Marie & Dorothy (my mother)
I am not sure how to reply. William Douglas, yes, I believe we have touched base before. I have a typed out "history" written by my Aunt Lucille Douglas. It's a bit romanticized. I have some pictures of ancestors. My Father Angus Dearborn Douglas was born in...…….Dearborn Michigan. Due to an unfortunate tendency to have female children, I am the last of this Line. It's too bad, I can trace back to 1638. If there is a way to maneuver on here I would love to scan and post my pictures and stories. Hi..my 2x GF was Lemuel Douglas b. 1811 in NOrth Carolina USA. He died in Orange County NC 1893 and is buried there..
His children, according to 1880 census, were Susan J, Martha F, John M, Levi W, Joseph Y, Sely A, and youngest, William Andrew Douglas, my 1x great grandfather, whom I was named after.
Lemuel was married to Frances Browning.
I have found in 1755 tax list from Orange County a John Douglas. The 1779 tax list has John Douglas, David Douglas, and William Douglas. None of them have wills that I can locate, only probate files with no family information, outside of of a probate for a John Douglas from 1816 with a widow of Margaret. I don’t know if this is the same John on the 3 tax lists.
I need help past Lemuel. I can’t find out his parents names, and thus, can’t connect him to one of the 3 Douglas’ on the tax lists. Please help if anyone knows anything about these Orange County NC Douglas’s.

Hi William. I have not been on the archives in a while and had left all my information but somehow can't find it .
My Major James Douglas was born Springwood Park Roxburgh 25/9/1768.He was sent out to India as a 16 year old cadet in East India Company. He had four children to a Indian Bibi.Rachel Douglas born1797 Bombay, Catherine born 1799 Bombay, Mary born1801 Bombay and James born1804 Bombay.
Major James Douglas died 1814 at his estate Edenside Kelso.
I have tried to find his parents and all I can find is a baptism for 22/3/1769 Ancrum Roxburgh father given as James Douglas.
Being born at Springwood Park the home of the Douglas nobility.
Rachael Douglas married James White a surgeon in Edinburgh 27/2/1821 at Saint Cuthberts and her brother James Douglas was also a surgeon.
They migrated to Australia with their children and her sisters and brother on the Kohinoor in 1852.
The Thomas born in 1824 is mysterious. I'm confident that he married Margaret Smollen, who I found in Irish records as born in 1822 in Collinstown, Westmeath, Ireland. According to the 1850 census, their son Thomas F. Douglass was born in 1848 in Ireland, their next child, Mary, was born in Philadelphia in 1850, so that brackets the years they could have emigrated fairly closely. That 1850 census lists his profession as tailor. Thomas (1824) died before the 1860 census (Margaret is listed as widowed in other documents, and I have a record of his burial here in Philadelphia.
There are two other Douglasses that died that same month and are buried in the same place - Thomas (born 1857) and Elizabeth (born 1832). They might be part of the puzzle, or they might be just a coincidence.
What I don't have is any idea of where in Ireland they came from. So going backward, which is what I'm trying to do now, what I have is more circumstantial. Thomas could actually be born in County Cork in 1827, but it looks more likely to be Clones, Monaghan, where I found baptismal records from 1827 that shows he was born in 1824. From there, there's a Thomas born in 1802, married to Fanny Litle, who is my best guess at Thomas's father, given everything, but now I manage to be both out-on-a-limb and up against a brick wll.
I am busy compiling my family tree at the moment. I have all of the documentation back to the 1300's positive back to 1669 with William Douglas who was the son of William (4th of Kirkness) Douglas. My Scottish ancestory started with John Douglas 1715 who moved to North Yorkshire and the family ended up in Seaham Harbour near Sunderland. Which is where I am from.
Hello, William and thanks for the welcome. I don't understand enough about the DNA stuff yet, but it's interesting. On my Dickey side, my haplogroup is I-M253. I don't have any Douglases there though that I recall.
On my mother's side, I have a Robbins whose mother was a Merrill and her grandmother was a Douglas, supposedly descended from William Douglas (1610 - 1682), but her haplogroup is H1.
Still trying to figure out how I can connect all of the pieces.
It seems my ancestor changed his name from James Affleck to James Douglas somewhere between 1883 and 1895. I am somewhat surprised and extremely dissapointed to find this out but intrigued also. There does not seem to be a link to the Douglas name before this as yet. Thank you for your help and this site.
Thank you William for accepting me into the Douglas Clan history I absolutely love the article on the haunting at Cavers very interesting indeed. Clarice Douglas
Hello, I am very pleased to have been admitted to the Douglas Archives. The info I have is that late eighteen/early nineteen hundred, there was an outbreak of ??? in Edinburgh and Caroline Douglas was sent to Robert Harden, Station Master in Kilsyth. Her father had a Saddler's shop in the Grassmarket, but I haven't beenable to find anything on this. Someone from the Registrar's came through and told them they were related to the Black Douglas. They named their cottage Douglas Cottage and recently the name was changed. I hope this will help and if I can find any more info I will let you know. I find this all so interestin g and meaningful. Thank you. Isabel
Good to meet you at the opening of the Douglas Monteith memorial opening. Seriously, if you want more info, get my book "Lord of the Skies" from Lulu.com. It is largely about my father, who died (actually disappeared for 2 years) in an air crash in West Africa.
Briefly, my grandfather was the 13th Duke of Hamilton, and I have quite a lot of information which could be of interest to you.

William, Curtiss Finch Douglass was a lawyer and judge in Noroton Heights, CT. He was my great grandfather, probably would have been in his prime during around 1900. He's the oldest known Douglass my family is aware of. I've not started research into it.
Information for Terence Douglas from 1821 Ireland census says living in Bective, County Meath, Ireland, former with wife Mary and children Edward, Mary and Patrick. Edward had birth record born in Navan, Meath, Ireland in 1800 with parents Terence Douglas and Mary Murray. I am trying to track the Ireland ancestors.
I had noticed that there were two different sets of parents listed for William Douglas. Is there any way to find out for sure? I'm happy to do the detective work, if it's even possible to find the answer. As soon as lockdowns are lifted I am going to be headed for Wigton, Edinburgh, Cockpen, and a few other locations to do some research.
Thank you for allowing me to join the group. I am trying to trace the Ancestors of James Douglas my 3x great grandfather, born we think in 1801 in Dundalk, County Lough, Southern Ireland.
My research so far has taken the following route. I knew that my maternal Great Grandfather was Frederick Douglas Born1869, as evidenced by family chat and old family documents. The1871 Census showed him living in Berkshire with his father William Douglas born 1843 in Standlake, Oxfordshire, together with his mother Harriet and his siblings. I then found William in the 1851 census living in the St Mary Magdalen area of Oxford showing his father James Douglas, then aged 50, occupation coal labourer, and his mother Jane. James's mother-in-law Susan Douglas Crapper, aged 88, was also living with them.. They had 11 children together and stayed in Oxford for the rest of their lives. He died at the age of 64. We have not managed to find any formal records of the Crapper family. James recorded his birthplace as Dun Dock (Dundalk) Ireland.
Its at that point I’ve hit a brick wall and would be delighted to hear from anyone who’s research has come across a Douglas family in Ireland.
D. 27 March 1815, Verdery, Greenwood, South Carolina, USA
His second wife was Nancy Ann Wilson
B. 1793, Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina, USA
D. 12 Nov 1852, Greenville, South Carolina, USA
"Est. of Archibald Douglas admin. April 25, 1815 by Nancy Douglass"
Donald Douglas sued John Baylis Earle in 1833 and in the lawsuit refers to the "intermarriage with Archibald Douglas' widow. Much documentation exists about this marriage. I can provide some.
Nancy Ann Wilson was about 20 years old when she married Archibald and 22 when he died. She administered Archibald Douglas' Will. I am attaching a page from a lawsuit between Donald Douglas and John Baylis Earle stating that Earle married Archibald's widow.Nancy%20Ann%20Wilson%20Widow%20of%20Archibald%20Douglas.docx
She remarried at 23 and had her only child at 24, Georgia Washington Earle, a wealthy heir. She was the second wife of John Baylis Earle b. 23 Oct 1776, Spartanburg, SC, d. 3 Feb 1836, Silver Glade Plantation, Pendelton, Anderson Dist, SC
Thanks for your response. My Douglases were in Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire not Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. I have seen the blogs mentioning CW and I do believe I am related to the families mentioned. Best wishes, Douglas
My grandfather was born in 1906 in Norther Chile, in the city Iquique that is also an important seaport in Chile. Based on this we think that our great-grandfather came to Northern part of Chile in the late 1800. We belive that he came to Chile with a Railway company to work for them. Best wishes Marcela
Thank you William as far as I am aware Samuel Martin Green was born in France and had the surname DeVere they moved to England and changed their name to Green. He is my great grandfather and he married Rachel Douglas my great grandmother. They had a daughter Rachel Maria Green who is my grandmother. She married my grandfather whose name is William Elkin Hutchison. They are all buried in the Purewa cemetery in Auckland New Zealand. I understand Samuel and Rachel met on the sailing ship the blue jacket which I think arrived in New Zealand in January 1861. The Douglas family came to New Zealand from Scotland with their 10 children six daughters and four sons. A cousin related to the Box side of the family did a lot of research and had a book printed for a Douglas reunion held in New Zealand which is where I got a lot of my information to start searching I hope this is of interest
Hello William - apologies if I'm doing this incorrectly (first time of using). Thank you for your comment. The answer is yes, it is Jane from Louisburg. As I understand it, she was born at Louisburg Fortress in 1758. Sadly, her mother (unknown to me) died in childbirth. I have her father as Captain William Douglas who fought with Maj.Gen.James Wolfe at the Battle of Louisburg, and died in 1759 (when Jane was 1 year old) at the Battle of Quebec. Jane married 3 times: Thomas Condon Mellish (in 1774), George Greatoe c.1781/2 and, John Burhoe / Brehaut 1787. I am not presently sure that her father was indeed Captain William, or that her grandfather was Rev. William. I see that you've sent some more links, so I'll now go take a look at them. Thank you.
Hiya William, thx for responding. Indeed, on first pass, I had taken it as true that Captain William was the father of Jane and the son of Rev. William but, upon closer inspection, I can find no evidence to support it. According to the documentation I've seen, Rev. William had only a daughter, no son. Also, I cannot find evidence for a Captain William Douglas with the right dates, let alone one that died at the Battle of Quebec. If anyone reading this post does have such information, please do let me know. I would very much like this to be true, as the ancestry of Nicola Hunter can be traced back to King James II. I fear however that it is not true. The only 'Douglas' I can find in documentation that is said to have died at the Battle of Quebec is Lieutenant John Douglas from the 78th (Fraser's) Highland Rangers. He was said to have been shot through the arm and to have died from his injuries. I am having difficulty however in further tracing Lieutenant John back. I think he travelled with the Rangers from Scotland in 1757, met Jane's mother locally, Jane was born in 1758, her mother died in childbirth and Lieut. John died 1 year later - making the tracing of ancestry very difficult..! Whether or not this is what actually happened I have no idea, but it is the only plausible explanation I've so far found evidence to support. Do you have any suggestions William as to where I can find additional information on Lieutenant John (Fraser's Highland Rangers)..?
Hi William, thank for letting me join. The William Douglas you mention as leaving money in 2001 was my uncle. It was the posting by Alison Christine Hodgkiss that caught my attention. The Aaron Douglas she is looking for does not appear in my family tree although all the other Douglases that she mentions are there.
Hi William, yes that's him and his father is mentioned on the headstone but is actually buried in the family plot at Trim. His brother George is also buried in Athboy as is his sister Elizabeth Rankin. Next row of graves. I have mowed the grass there many times! The next row has an Albert Douglas - not on our family tree, his father came from County Wicklow.
My DNA!!! Atleast I know in the Douglas ftdna project my kit is 925754 and I have 1 match r1b group95. I tested for Y111 but I noticed a huge DYS425 is 0 null which is rare, my match is also null. Everything about that null value is pointing to Ireland. On all of FTDNA matching my closest for 111 is 8 gd away so FAR and is not a Douglas.
On to the next, on familysearch (I've seen referenced on this site) it says Johan Rosie Douglas is my 4th cousin -2X. Going back to William 1780 and Ann Elder
he was by records only 13. I thought boys had to be 14 and girls 12 to marry. I only mention it as I see questionable ages all the time what about anyone else?
I descend from Williams younger brother Alexander (1793) or Williams 2nd son (1795). I say that as the only piece of proof of Alexander in Milwaukee is a 1850 Census stating his age is 55.
William, thank you for the greeting and the information, but after I put the info in, I returned to studies and realized that I was relying on flawed data from a family member. The earliest ancestor I can follow is James David Douglass of Virginia born around 1723. His son John William was married to Mary Bryan whom upon John's death at the battle of Blue Licks in Kentucky(1782), married the surveyor Ralph Morgan. I have been working at this off and on for about 10 years and find it as satisfying as I do frustrating. I'm hoping that I can get some insight from my fellow Douglas'. Cheers.
Thank you but I am looking for where he was born and birthdate as well as his parents. He just appears in Virginia about 1700. It’s like he jumped there from an unknown place. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey there y'all! I am new to this site and in my research for more info on my family. I am not sure which way to go, so I will start at what I know as the beginning of our little spot in the world. I know some about my Mom's family, and not a lot really about my bio-dad. Douglas was my Mom's maiden name. She was a divorced, single mom when I came a long. I was given her name. So, MY earliest knowledge is of Goldie Vonetta Chitwood (my grandmother aka Mamaw) and Raymond Robert Douglas (Papaw). They "courted" as teens in Anthras, TN. Not sure of exact year but I "guesstimate" that it was around 1920 or so. They married young and began a family. My Mamaw stayed home with her kids and worked the land around their small one room house. Papaw was a hard working coal miner, active in the community and was a deacon at a small church in Anthras. They ultimately had 9 living kids. I am not 100% sure of their order, but I will try to list what info I know below:
Larry Kyle Douglas ( I think he was eldest. He served in the military as a young man. He has several wives over the years. Once he left the military I believe he moved to Lancaster, Ohio to be with his wife? Not sure of profession)
Phyllis Douglas-I think she was second born. She also ultimately married young to Billy Joe Letner, also from TN. They too moved to Ohio. They both were "Evangelical Missionaries". As far as we know they did not leave the country much. They have a daughter named Cindi Ogg who is still living.
Doris Douglas, unsure of birthday, unsure of middle name/initial. Also married young to ....last name Hemenway (not sure of spell). Has a daughter, Kimberly and a son that passed away young, named Barry Hemenway.
So sorry to end at an odd spot. My battery is dying on me and on my laptop! Hopefully be back tomorrow! Goodnight from TN!
Thank you for the welcome, greatly appreciated! I reached out to Brad Bosley. I look forward to being a part of this group. are you a board member or administrator?
Yes, I am finding Archibald to be a mystery which prompted me to do further research rather than rely on others for "facts." I have done a DNA test as well as my 97 year old aunt. She is my father's older sister. I often call to see what else she might remember. She has done much research over the years. When their father left them during the depression they became alienated from the family somehow. Her knowledge is limited and there is no one left to share. I will now begin researching my great aunts and uncles and their descendants and try to work up from there. I believe many headed to the Midwest.
Our part of the Douglas's are from the Nashville, Tennessee area. My father Alfred Ewing (Jr) was the only son of Alfred Ewing Douglas (Sr) He also had two daughters, my aunts. We are many decedents coast to coast with several DNA tests...much to still unravel. I have my work cut out for me so any help is welcome and appreciated. I also need to learn to navigate your awesome website so patience please!
According to my sourced research and DNA matches, William Hogg b. 08 Oct 1769 Yetholm, Roxburgh is a 4th GGF of mine. According to my Ancestry research tree, his mother, Isobel Stephenson/Stevenson b. 1704 is the daughter of Elizabeth Douglas b. 1704, who is in turn the daughter of James Douglas b. 1682 Kelso, Roxburgh is possibly my 7th GGF. As this connection is unproven, other than Ancestry trees, I would like to be able to access more roust genealogy. David Elliott of Hawick recommended that I review your site as a way to access higher quality, sourced research.
My branch of the Douglas family from Hull are descendants of my 3rd GGF George Douglas b1790 going further back to my 9th GGF Thomas b1610 married to Dorithe Silversides June 1639,his father was John b1580 and his father William 1550 they are all recorded as being baptised in York and that is all I know about them,we may have family connections from Leeds but I'm having difficulty finding any more information,I think It's fair to assume that we did originate from Scotland and I would really like to make that connection, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would love to find out more information about him and his parents, grandparents, etc. so I can learn more about my ancestors before they came to the United States.
*His son, James, is my direct ancestor (5 generations.) He married Rachel J Doolittle on 2/2/1856.

Thanks for your response. My Douglases were in Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire not Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. I have seen the blogs mentioning CW and I do believe I am related to the families mentioned. Best wishes, Douglas

Many thanks William for your response.

Thank you.

Hello again William. May I ask what it is that occasions you to think that Rev. William Douglas might be the grandfather of Jane..?

The Spella House home of Percy and Mary (Band) Douglas is the one you have found in Lower Boddington.
Do you realise this might disappear in the HS2 construction?
sorry to have taken so long to reply - I haven't been to the "Douglas " site for years!
Best wishes, John.22.12.2020.

Thank you for the warm welcome, William.

Thank you for adding me to your group.

Good Morning William
Thank you for adding me to your group.
Thanks Andy
