James Douglas owned an apple plantation and built cider mills which operated by steam power in Calhoun County, Illinois.
He married Margaret Nichols, and was a native of the same State, having been born in Caroline County, and like her husband spent her entire life in Maryland. This couple had six sons, two of whom, Isaac N. and Joseph, died in their youth. Thomas H. married Janet Smoot; Joseph 2d, married Celia Wright and for his second wife Charlotte Wilson; John married Nancy Turpin; Jeremiah married Susan Thompson.

This is my great-great grandfathers home. His name was James Robinson Douglas(s). He graduated from the U of MO as an MD and married Maria Elizabeth Carr (b 22 Jan 1825; d 11 Aug 1896. His father was Jeremiah and mother Susannah Thompson. I have quite a bit of genealogy for this line going back (in America) to Col. John Douglass who was born in Scotland somewhere around 1636.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
