I did notice, that the website for this farm is not up & running.
As far as this tradition is concerned, personally, I have never heard of it. Quite an interesting concept & story here.

I am not sure that this farm is still operational.

While researching the farm's history, I came across this interesting statement:

During the Civil War, three Rowe brothers signed up to the army. The family decided to follow the traditional Scottish tradition of the Douglas clan. Two brother would fight for the North and one would fight for the south. This ensured the family to be on the winning side. All three brothers survived the war and returned to manage the family farm. The two brothers who fought for the North won Medals of honor, and are listed on the all in the Pentagon.

Is anyone familiar with this traditional tradition?

Douglas Farm is a multigenerational farm and apiary with a long American history. The family first started farming in America around 1652.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
