I just looked it up...

In heraldry, the direction of a helmet can indeed signify a difference. Helmets are often depicted facing either to the left or to the right, and this can carry specific meanings or denote different ranks or statuses.

For instance, in some heraldic traditions, a helmet facing to the left is associated with nobility or knighthood, while a helmet facing to the right is associated with lower-ranking individuals or commoners. In other cases, the direction of the helmet may indicate the bearer's lineage or family line.

Additionally, the type of helmet depicted can also hold symbolic meaning. For example, a closed helmet may represent strength and protection, while an open helmet may symbolize openness and readiness for battle.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
