Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
Alice Maud Johnson, (1854-1924 or 25?), born in Chelsea, London, England, emigrated to Canada with her family in 1856. She married Howard Douglas (1850-1929) in Bronte, Ontario (now Hamilton) in 1871, and they had three children born there: Katherine Clothilde (Katie) (1873-1967); Tom Clifford and Roy Alfred (dates unknown). A third son, Ralph, was born later in Calgary. Howard Douglas supervised the laying of the C.P.R. track across the Prairies in 1882-3, the family accompanying him in a house car in the summer of '83. They settled in Calgary where Howard built the first house on the recently-surveyed C.P.R. townsite. Howard eventually became the second superintendent of Rocky Mountain Park (now Banff National Park).

He was instrumental in bringing the last great buffalo herd to Alberta. These animals lived in Banff for many years, then were moved to Wood Buffalo National Park, where they remain to this day. The idea of preserving an endangered species was very unusual in his day, so he did quite a fine thing in this way. There is a Mount Howard Douglas, named for him, near Banff.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Howard Douglas 1850

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
