I am traveling to Dumfries, Wigtown, and Castle Douglas to try to confirm the lineage of William Douglas (born 1668). Any suggestions for how to find this info once I'm there? His father is listed as Gilbert Douglas, but others say that he couldn't have been the father.I am already planning to go to Clachans at Peninghame and the Dumfries and Galloway Family Heritage Society. Any other suggestions?See More

"Thanks William!  I had noticed that there were two different sets of parents listed for William Douglas. Is there any way to find out for sure? I'm happy to do the detective work, if it's even possible to find the answer. As soon as…"

Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I'm looking for the line of Rev William Douglas, who moved from Scotland to Virginia in the 1700s and compiled the Douglas Register. As best I can tell he came from Wigton and is the son of William Douglas (buried in Clachans of Penningham) and Grizel McKeand, and the grandson of Gilbert Douglas (Possibly buried in Glenrassie, Penninghame or Over-Gogar, Midlothia) and Margaret McIlroy. Then the line disappears and I can't find anything about them.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Rev William Douglas

Welcome to our group, Kara

William Douglas and Grizel McKeand come up in discussions from time to time.  One reason is that William is not necessarily the son of Gilbert and Margaret.

It could be that he was born in Cockpen, Midlothian to William Douglas (1649-1668) and Isabel Elizabeth Kennedy (1645-1668)

Nobody is quite sure.  But have a good root around the Douglas Archives. The couple appear in several diferent pages.

Yours aye,

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
