Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
My great grand father Walter Douglas, begat Edward Douglas who lived and died in East Lothan. I don't know much beyond that for the moment. I've yet to establish any further ancestry. I'm looking to establish my own line through DNA test and research.

Making conections

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
