A collection of historical and genalogical records

Before I continue with Colonel Thomas Dale in Jamestown it might help if I provide a biographical sketch for him. Prior to Dale's arrival in England the "States General of the United Netherlands consented that Thomas Dale (destined by the King of Great Britain to be employed in Virginia in his "Majestys" Services) may absent himself from the company for the space of three years, and that his said company shall remain meanwhile vacant to be received by him if he thinks proper". Dale was fluent in Dutch and French and some understanding in other languages including English. Sir Thomas left Jamestown in 1616 in the "Treasurer" taking with him John Rolfe, his wife Rebecca, better remembered as Pocohontes and a one year old son named Thomas Rolf. In 1618 was off again, heading for the East Indies and commanding a squadron of six ships to take on the agressive proclevities of the Dutch in the East Indies. Dale arrived at Bantam in the East Indies in November 1616 and on December 23, 1618 engaged the Dutch fleet off Jacatra and in the swamps contracted a sickness and died at Masuli Ipatnam in India. Shortly thereafter his brother, Richard Dale, contracted the same disease and perished as well in India.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
