A collection of historical and genalogical records
Maryport
1¼ miles SSE. [South South East] of the village of Drummore.
A good farm house two stories high and out houses all slated & in good repair with a farm containing 165 acres of good land Occupied by Alexander McDowall the property of Col. [Colonel] McDowall of Logan. This place may have derived its name from the Virgin Mary. The Print of whose knee is fabulously reported to be seen on a Stone where she prayed on the Land on Maryport Bay it is also said that there was a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary but no trace of it can be seen now.
I can find no trace of land ownership by the Douglases or Maxwells here.
But note that Logan was a Maxwell property for many years, so there is a possible connection. The estate has been on the market for some time, and is currently 'under offer', so too late to bring it back into your family!
Ladywell
A small well over grown with grass from it a small stream runs till it meets the sea (at Lady Bay) it is frequented by persons bringing children that were not in a thriving state to be washed in it they believed by so doing that the child would recover its strength. It takes its name from Lady Bay as it is adjacent thereto.
I have been unable to find a douglas or Maxwell connected to land ownership here
Welcome to our community, Debbie.

• 02 Jul 1749 - John lawful son of William Maxwell and Elizabeth Douglas in Ladywell Kirkmaiden was born on the 29th of June and Baptised on the 2nd of July 1749 years
• 01 Sep 1751- Alexander lawful son to William Maxwell and Elizabeth Douglass in Lady Well Kirkmaiden was born on the 25th of August and Baptised on the 1st of September 1751 years
Yours aye,
William
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
