In addition to the above, there is an unusual container resting on the floor of
the chancel, containing a pair of lead heart-shaped caskets sealed behind a
glass plate. The 19th-century plaques ascribe them to ‘the Good Sir James of
Douglas’ and Archibald, 5th Earl of Angus (’Bell the Cat’). These, and a third in
Melrose Abbey Museum, are the only heart caskets surviving in Scotland

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
