James Douglass is a very common name!

In searching records on Scotlands People, I filtered the name and added his occupation which resulted in a match in Wills and Courts for a James Douglass:

Excerpts from Inventory of personal estate of James Douglas at Lauder 5 Dec 1842

"James Douglas, Shepherd at Kedslie who deceased 9th of July 1840 given up by Thomas Douglas shepherd at Craik  Jane Douglas residng there and James Douglas shepherd there executors qua nearest of kin decerned and to be confirmed to the defunct."

"Deposit receipt by agents of British Linen Co at Melrose 3 Nov 1838 L20"

"estate situated in Scotland in the value of one hundred and eighteen pounds eight shillings and two pence and [sic] the  value of 200 pounds."

Also mentioned in inventory are clothes, silver watch, and tools, etc. Also livestock of 33 ewes and a cow. Guess he was doing well. No debts mentioned in the document. Still not entirely sure of the information but think it's a possible match. I have cross checked the Family Search site and they have this James Douglass connected to a Robert Douglass and Isabel Madder in Crailing, Roxburghshire, and that line goes back pretty far.

If you have any information that relates to this, then please contact me. As usual, the abundance of matching names and not enough information before 1841 makes the puzzle even more difficult. None of these records state an age or birthdate.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
