Sadly, Jeanee, I know very little about the migration of shepherds, except that they crop up in research from time to time, usually when connecting movement through Sutherland.
It seems Highland lairds, or their land managers, recruited Lowlanders to look after the flocks that replaced those moved to the coastal settlements, Ireland or abroad.
Your mention of the so-called Lowland Clearances is interesting because this often goes un-remarked, and is less emotive than in the Highlands of Scotland.
Probably not relevant, but I am also interested in the recruitment of sheep farmers to Patagonia and the Falkland Islands.
I touch on all this in various places in the Douglas Archives, but maybe a more specific set of articles is required. Ummm

Several Douglas shepherds moved from the Scottish Borders to the Highlands at the time of the Clearances. Might your James be one of those families?
