Hi James, I suppose we are both disappointed by the DNA results.
With what you had discovered it felt so true I could almost touch it!
(Maybe wishful thinking will do that after many years without a result).
Never mind..In my case.."Back to the drawing board.."
I thought I would share a recent finding from Wikipedia..& wondered if you had sighted it previously :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sholto_Johnstone_Douglas
where you will see a pic of Sholto Douglas's cousin Lord Alfred Douglas with a Oscar Wilde. (Douglas had stood surety for Wilde's bail).
And please don't hesitate to get in touch if you come across any more promising leads..My Meath connection is definitely correct..But beyond...Still, I do believe the Douglas family connects to its Scottish roots not too far beyond the early 1800's.
All the best.

Hi James,
I wondered why I hadn't heard back from you since we last exchanged ideas and our DNA kit numbers.
Mine eventually came through which I double checked today...Sadly though..no match was identified with yours and mine.
"No shared DNA segments found
406276 SNPs used for this comparison.
Comparison took 0.219 seconds.
CPU time used: 0.040 cpu seconds.

No arguing with DNA..I guess.
Thank you for contacting me re. the Douglas's of Ireland..
It was worth a try!
Keep on..keeping on!
Nest wishes,

I'll still be available on here and on my email if anything further come sto mind.
Hi James,
Very exciting and most promising news you bring! :)
We 'must' be connected..
I thought my DNA had been uploaded onto Gedmatch.com..it hadn't!
However, as of 10 minutes ago it now is.
My Kit no. : YN9565196 See if you can do the 'one-to-one' comparison as soon as it becomes available (24hrs?)
Without searching my profile. by memory I wrote..
my Gt Grandparents were Aaron Douglas(1838-1901) & Rose Coffey(1836-1899)..both from Meathtravelled separately to Melbourne Australia where they married and started my grandmother's line. (Elizabeth McFarlane, nee Douglas)
Aaron's father: George (William?) Douglas (farmer)B. abt 1809 perhaps Oldcastle? Meath.
Aaron's mother: Mary Sweeney B. abt 1811..Meath?
Rose Coffey's father : Michael Coffey (blacksmith)..abt 1815 ..Meath, Ireland.
Rose's mother: Ellen Boghan or Bagshaw? (prob Meath?)
That's all I can positive confirm..going by marriage cert in Melb Australia.
However, the Douglas siblings names seemed to be repeated and certainly a George William Douglas Snr and Jnr were used here.
One exciting development of late has been the confirmation (thanks to DNA) on "My Heritage" of discovering a Douglas descendant 88yr old 1st cousin x2 removed..right in my own backyard. so to speak..From there I have met her one remaining sister, and been privileged to obtain various old photographs of her family..which I am still scanning editing and saving to usb for them both.

I have just located a Rev John Douglas, who was a curate in St Bees in 1825. I am working on his entry right now. He could be a relative?
I am adding more to the Cumberland page today, as well. And linking in this entry: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/clementina_douglas.htm which is a bit of unproven fun with a supposed Bonnie Prince Charlie connection.
But you are more interested in Ireland. We have a group for Douglas families in Ireland.
Welcome to our group, James.
I have not been very successful in my Cumberland research, but there are some names on this list which may help: http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/Lists/cumberland_inhabitants.htm
I will be updating the page later today, if I can find more.
Also, I suggest that you search this section using the box top right. There are several 'Cumberland' references.
Yours aye,
William
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
