Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I'm looking to find those with 'Lumsden' Douglas. Am new to family history. My grandmother was Helen Lumsden Douglas and she immigrated as a child to Australia from Newcastle Upon Tyne. Was always told Lumsden was a family name that was used like a middle name. C
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Helen Lumsden Douglas

Hi Joanne.

I did a quick search on Find-my-past and got 2 possible hits:

Helen L Douglas born 1911 in Castle Ward (Newcastle, Northumberland)

and in the 1921 Census as Helen Lunsden Douglas in Northumberland

Possibly the years are wrong (too early?) for your Grandmother

Best regards

I am trying to add to the following:

Helen Lumsden Douglas was a notable figure in Australia's history. She was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in England and migrated to Australia as a child. Douglas became known for her involvement in education and her contributions to social work in Australia. She was instrumental in advocating for improved education and social welfare policies, particularly for women and children. Her dedication and efforts left a lasting impact on Australian society.

Any contributions?

Welcome to our community, Joanne.

Although I associate the name Lumsden with Aberdeenshire, I also recall visiting Arden many years ago when it was occupied by the Lumden family.  It is not far from where I now live, near Loch Lomond.

However, I wonder if this connection has something to do with Blanerne, where I stayed even more years ago.  Blenerne, as it was known, was a Douglas property.

1607: David Lumsden of Blenerne and Lumsden sold the lands of Blenerne to Archibald Douglas, Esq. Of Tofts.
20th November 1609: att which time Pentland was wodfet to Archibald Douglas of Toftis in liferent, and to his fone in fie under reverfion

Newcastle was used by Scots as a port of embarkation, so, although there are Lumsdens in that city, that is no guarantee that your family lived there.

Can you add any dates and events to the detail that you provided?  It might help others link up with your family. There are some good sleuthers here!

Yours aye,

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
