The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Colonel Edward Douglas born Dec 1590 in Scotland his ancestry

married widow Isabel Dale sister to Sir Thomas Dale, royal governor of Virginia. Isabel was born in Middlesex County, England. Edward Douglas was born in Scotland 14 Dec 1590 and died in Northampton County, Virginia 2 Nov 1657. Upon the death of Elizabeth Throgmorton Dale, the widow of Governor Dale it is presumed Edward married Isabel and his rights to an inheritance over-rode those mentioned in the will of Elizabeth Throgmorton Dale. Edward became seized, by patent, the land called "Dale's Gift" in Northampton County, Virginia."Dales Gift" was the very first patent issued in America. Upon Col Edward Douglas' death Isabel married the Rev. Thomas Teackle and in time they moved to Accomack County, Virginia.

In his will Edward Douglas mentions his cousin Edmund Boweman of Accomack County. Edmund was probably born in Scotland. It was disheartening to find only one reference to an Edward Douglas of Scotland. (See Fife County, Scotland,Dunfermline Parish Register 1561-1700} 11 Nov 1632 Andrew Elder and Janet Phine hand Isabel; wit- Edward Douglas, Thomas Douglas, William Pillonis

My efforts have been fruitless in finding Edward.Edward was a leader in Northampton County and always addressed as a gentleman.

If someone can point me in the proper direction I would be most appreciative.  Henry B. Hunt, Jr.

You are most welcome Mr.Hunt .   The volumes of the Virginia Colonial Abstracts I have found very interesting .

My niece recently married a fellow by the name of Stone , I shall inquire as to his lines ...

I have this afternoon made entries for two Col Edward Dougas(s)es in the Archives:

Col Edward Douglas, 1590-1657

Col Edward Douglass, 1713-1795

Neither answers questions, but add, I hope, to the dialogue.

At least one source gives Col Douglass' date of birth as c 1620.  Since his son Edward was born c 1650 this would seem to be in a reasonable date range.

Note: To confuse matters another source indicates that Edward Douglass was 18 years of age at the time of his father's death. Col Douglass died 26 April, 1657 according to an entry in a deed of sale between William Willett (son-in-law) and William Baker dated 13 May, 1698.  If Edward was 18 yrs at the time of his father's death his DOB would be c 1639 making the 1595 birth date for Col Edward Douglass more plausible.

Also interesting to note is the possible connections of the Blackmore and George families to Lt.Col Edward Douglass line.  Blackmore and George connections continue from Virginia to the line of Col Edward Douglass 1713 - 1795.  This is perhaps additional evidence of the descent of Col Edward of Sumner, Tennessee from Lt. Col Edward Douglass of Northampton, Virginia.  I am still looking for more documentary evidence/ proofs to definitively connect the two lines.

A deed of sale between William Willett, son of Elizabeth Douglas Willitt and William Baker dated 13 May, 1698 indicates that Edward Douglass, son of Col Douglass is deceased. The deed names Elizabeth as Edward's sister and heir. This would indicate Edward died after his father, Col Douglass, who died in 1657 and before his sister Elizabeth, who died c 1672. It does not mention any children or other heirs of Edward.  Without any evidence to show that Edward had children that lived to maturity it would make it difficult to connect the lines of Lt. Col Edward Douglass and Col. Edward Douglass 1713 - 1795.

Has anyone in this line done a DNA test?

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Douglas

I looked through the ancestor list on the family tree DNA site and did not see any individuals that I could connect to this line.  I am a direct lineal descendant of Edward Douglass 1713 - 1795 and plan to do the DNA testing in the near future.  That may help some trying to make connections to his line.

There is another source that links the line of Lt Col Douglass to the line of Col Edward Douglass that may provide additional verifications.I do not have access to a copy but found that there is a copy in the Nashville, Tennessee public library.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
