Yes it would be great to take the story of John & Bridget Douglass of Yarm further back.  The story goes that John, a Catholic, was originally from Scotland but was 'exiled after Stuart defeats', but so far we've never got to the bottom of this and it may be one of those 'family legends'!  I'm currently looking at a possibility that John might have been a surgeon-apothecary in Durham, but it's a bit speculative.

Happy to see if I can help contribute to your amazing site, and likewise to help any others who wish to contact me who might have an interest in this branch of the family.

Definitely 'ss', by the way!  All have ever since emphatically adopted that particular spelling - my brother, son, and several cousins also use it as a middle name...!

Thank you, William, for this information.  I would like to further add to my family tree details pertaining to my extended family.  Also, there are some misspelled names I'd like to correct for the record.  So glad to hear from you.

A couple of research statistics on Eunice Rattleaf or Ratliffe. Bruce Douglass's study of Eunice said that there is "no record of Rattleaf or Ratliffe in Middleborugh, Freetown or Swansea" which are close areas near Plymouth, Mass.

Where did she come from? They married in Middleborugh which is a city near Plymouth, Mass. Also from Bruce's study she is referred"perhaps an indian". We have all who researched John and Eunice Douglas heard about this undocumented info that she was referred as a princess of a famous indian chief called Massasoit, a chief of the Wampanoags Indian tribe.  I took a autosomal DNA test from Ancestry and I didn't have any native American ancestry. I am connected to Elisha Douglas like Bruce is connected. Elisha was one of the sons to John Douglass. This Eunice Rattleaf or Ratliffe is a big a mystery as who was the family of John Douglas.

I too doubt that we 'imported' a John D from Pensylvania, but there is that mention of a Capt JD, pos a sea captain?

I am searching for the parents of my great grand parents.  I am hoping that someone has a connection. Below are their dates of birth and death for my great grand parents. I have copies of newspaper obits that I found in a trunk that got me this far.  lol  My husband is a Beardsley and is documented to 1638 and to England.  We believe we have mutual ties but then many of us do.  Thank you for any help.  Sherri

Yes I agree, unlikely, but about this era, all my male ancestors seem to be 'John' without the addition of another identifying name. Later on, it's so much easier. viz James Struthers and his siblings! Still.... nil desperandum.

You are probably aware that Benjamin Douglass has his name on a plaque set in the stone work of the front of Trades Hall in Melbourne.

I have a fair bit of information on him and I believe he was the first of my line to arrive in Australia.

Benjamin was a brother to my G/G Grandfather, George Douglass of Patterson Rd Plumstead Kent. I am remote from my records at the moment so birth and death records will have to follow. (different George to the one you sent info on I'd say)

George married Annie Dowling and produced my G Grandfather, Henry Thomas. Henry married Margaret Katherine Fox and he settled in Ballarat where he was a baker. 

My Grandfather was Harold Uison. Born Ballarat.

Interestingly John Douglass of Greenwich married Jane Hewson or Hewison, and I have seen both spelling variations on two different records so whichever is correct, it would be safe to say that that would be where my Grandfathers unusual middle name came from.

Anyone familiar with the dialect of the people of that part of England (or even watched an episode of "Eastenders" would know how they would pronounce "Hewson" or "Hewison". They don't pronounce the "H".

I have plenty of info post John of Greenwich as there have been official civil records since 1837, so it is not so simple tracing ancestors pre that date. (unless one was fortunate to lock into a title)

All my research was done pre the internet and has sat dormant since.

I have never looked into church records and of course I have no idea when or how long the quaker element was around.

The Hewson/Hewison link has been said to be worth looking at but my Grandfather evidently had an ability to embellish any story.

I am very new to searching my family's genealogy and had some luck finding information on the Sherwood name from my Mother's side on the Douglas Archives website. My maiden name is Tripp and I have found information that indicates our lineage can be traced to John Tripp b. 1610 from Lincolnshire Northumberland Co, England, who was the first of that family to immigrate to the US. I am trying to finding additional sources to document that connection. Thank you for your comment!

James Douglass of Voluntown had an ancestor (Lt. Douglass) who fought and was killed in the Seige of Derry in 1689 (he was a defender of Derry). We still have not been able to identify that Douglass specifically and the records of the Seige do not give his first name. James Douglass' first child, William, was born in Ireland in February 1728. The three of them (James, wife Janet, and William) arrived in Connectict in the summer of 1729. In CHJD's book he once refers to William (b. 1610) as James' cousin, but don't know if that is a true cousin reference or just because they both had surnames "Douglass". He came from Ireland after being there for only a short time.

My Samuel of Newtownards is the father of Henry and Hugh.  His widow, Agnes, came to New York City with five sons and one daughter in 1850.  I am the first child in my line that was not born in NYC, being born in VT.  I have a lot of info on Agnes and her family in the US, but ran into a dead end in Northern Ireland.

Yes, Henry B Douglass the sword owner is one of the sons of Samuel Douglass of Newtonards.  The family left Northern Ireland in 1850 and based on birth-dates of the children it is likely Samuel perished due to famine/cholera  along with many others shortly before 1850 and is buried in unmarked part of the only local cemetery.

I'm Wayne's mother and am answering for him as he wasn't sure.  Yes, we (Wayne's dad, Dan, and I) do have a picture of the original building -  but it's a photocopy and not that great.  The building still stands and is in pretty good shape.  I'm not sure if IOOF still owns the building.  The American Legion held meetings there for years.  Plus, it's had a couple other businesses in the building over that past several years.  One was a dance studio on the upper level which our youngest daughter was enrolled in for lessons.  I have a little more info on the building if you're interested.

Alpha Douglas was my father's grandfather, in Oskaloosa, Iowa--late 1800's and early 1900's.  He was married to Alice (nee Wing) Douglas. They raised a slew of children. I have the list in a drawer and I'll bring it out. I posted a lot of known connections on Ancestry.com; does this website do something similarly?

I discovered that Ronald and his family were listed as passengers on a ship going to New York in 1931but I don't know if he continued to travel between the UK and USA after that. He had a daughter called June. His father was George Daniel Wilson Douglas, born 1865 in Bradford; died 1935.

I am very excited about this!  The information I have includes almost exactly what you sent to me.  I will send you the information I have; what I have deciphered so far.  The original is handwritten and I have a copy of the original and it has taken me awhile to figure out all that it says.  By the way, my brother's name is William Douglas Newman.  :)

Hi William, thanks so much for this but I really am interested in finding DOUGLAS in Ireland - Edenburt especially.  My Great Grandmother was an immigrant to Whitehaven from Edenburt, Lurgan, Co. Cavan. Her Brother John must have come with her because he turned up in Liverpool, Lancashire whilst she married Thomas BENNET in St Bees, Cumberland in 1835.  I found a Thomas BENNET in Edenburt too - he came up on the census at Whitehaven but born in Ireland.  She was kind enough to visit her brother on census night - otherwise I might never have found her.

Yes that is the same man, he did have a son William Eagles. Do you have a genealogy that includes Frank Johnson Douglas?
