If you lay out all you know about your great great grandfather and then look for connections, this might be the way forward, but that depends on who he was and what conections he had. Who was your great-grandmother? Who were his sisters? What was his profession? Where did he die? Where was he before that?
I either of them lived, or was born in Scotland, then Scotland;s people migh be a place to search:

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work
