Colonel John Douglas

Would like to know if anyone has information about Colonel John Douglas? He was born in Glasgow in 1636 and immigrated to the American Colonies in 1655. He married Catherine Sarah Bonner-Bowles in 1663 and they owned a tobacco plantation in Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland Military and promoted to the rank of Colonel. Col John Douglas died in 1678. I think he was the son of Sir Robert Douglas of Blackerston but I am not sure. I have him in my family tree as my 9th generation…See More

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I am connected to the "Black Douglases." My 9XGreat Grandfather was Sir Robert Douglas of Blackerston, Blythswood. He was the father of COL John Douglas who immigrated to the American Colonies in 1655 and bought land in Charles County, Maryland. COL John Douglas married Sarah Bonner Bowls and lived on the Bowls Plantation.

Thank you, Michael, for telling us about your ancestry.

I wonder if you have taken a DNA test?  (See the DouglasDNA project:
https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/douglas/about/results )

The reason for my asking is that the story around your ancestor has been challenged, and as far as I know no clear result has emerged.
See: https://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/john_douglas4.htm

This is an important link in our family's history, and the more evidence that we can collect, the better.

For interest, the extensive Douglas of Mains estates once extended to within half a mile of my home, the last property on the estate being my neighbours on Camoquhill Douglas.  The last of the direct line died recently.

Yours aye,

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
