The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Would like to know if anyone has information about Colonel John Douglas? He was born in Glasgow in 1636 and immigrated to the American Colonies in 1655. He married Catherine Sarah Bonner-Bowles in 1663 and they owned a tobacco plantation in Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland Military and promoted to the rank of Colonel. Col John Douglas died in 1678. I think he was the son of Sir Robert Douglas of Blackerston but I am not sure. I have him in my family tree as my 9th generation grandfather. His son, Captain Joseph Douglas is my 8th generation grandfather. If anyone has any information about Colonel John Douglas I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

This won't solve the difficulties, but might contribute to your research:

Follow the link to his son, Joseph, for more on the family.

Thank you William Douglas!

This information is very helpful and tells me a great deal about Col John Douglas and his son Joseph Douglas. I am confident that they are my 9th and 8th generation grandfathers. My great Grandfather was David Edward Douglass. As to who was Col John Douglas's father, I may never know. However, I have Robert Douglas of Blackerston down in my family tree.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
