"It seems my ancestor changed his name from James Affleck to James Douglas somewhere between 1883 and 1895. I am somewhat surprised and extremely dissapointed to find this out but intrigued also. There does not seem to be a link to the Douglas name…"
Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
William Affleck Douglas married Mary Collins in 1895 (Bo'ness) Certificate names James Douglas as father and Mother Susan Garrigal (deceased). Parents now thought to be James Affleck and Susan McGarrigal possibly members of the travelling community although James was originally from Ayton and died in Kinross 1923.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
William Douglas (died 1945 Alloa)

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
