The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

According to the entry in the History section of the Douglas Archives, John Douglas, the second son of William Douglas of Leith (3 December 1696-) and Katherine Dunlop (of Garnkirk) (1695-1785c), was born about 1745 and baptised at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 15 December 1745.

The entry states that John Douglas married Cecilia Buchanan, the daughter of George Buchanan (1686-1773) and Cecilia Forbes (1715-), one of the most prominent families of Glasgow, who was born at Glasgow in Lanarkshire on 7 February 1740 and baptised there on 14 February of that year.

However, I have Cecilia Buchanan's birth recorded as 'abt 1748' in the genealogy database, and her mother, Cecilia Forbes as being born in 'abt 1665'.

Checking on this discrepancy, I find other researchers give a range of dates.

A negative of a photograph of a portrait of 'Mrs. John Douglas (Cecilia Buchanan)' is apparently held in the Frick Art Reference Library, New York. It would be good to know where the original is.

Any help with the above would be welcome.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
