Scandal in the family

It is always fun to discover hanky panky in the family history, and so it was not really a surprise to discover that the daughter of my 13th great-grandfather was a naughty girl, when not much more that her sixteenth birthday - she became the mistress of King James V.

Elizabeth Carmichael, also know as Katherine, bore the King a son, a son, John, Prior of Coldingham, who thus became half-brother to the ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots.

Another of the King's mistresses was Margaret Erskine, wife of Robert Douglas of Lochleven, my 11th great-grandfather. Margaret also had a son by the king, James, Earl or Moray.

In the portrait, King James is seen with his wife, Mary of Guise.
