Sir John James, 3rd Baronet , was the son of Sir George Douglas 2nd Baronet of Springwood. .

Douglas (1792-1836) joined the 15th Light Dragoons in 1813 and saw active service in the Peninsula and at Waterloo. In 1819 he purchased a captaincy in the 22nd Light Dragoons but the following year the regiment was disbanded and he went on to half pay. He succeeded his father as 3rd Baronet in 1821. By royal license 10 July 1822, he took the name of Scott before that of Douglas, in consequence of his intended marriage.
