A collection of historical and genalogical records
I have long wondered about the origin of the salamander that appears in Douglas heraldry and recalled that there was an article in the Australian newsletter many years ago.
Today, researching early uses of the stars on our armorials, particularly those of the Douglas Scotti, I stumbled across a couple of French 'blasons' with stars, one of which also had a salamander.
I made a re-visit to the article and found that the salamander is used in several French armorials.
We think that there may be a Flemish origin of the stars on the Douglas coats of arms, but could there be a French link as well?

The last link is the one I meant to send. It makes a mention of the Scotti Douglas, Charlemagne, the Gonzaga's & the Pallavacino's.
The motto, "Jamais Arriere" is also French... perhaps the answer resides in the Auld Alliance?
These are the arms of Simon William ( French Guillaume ) Gabriel Bruté de Rémur ( March 20, 1779 in Rennes , Brittany , France ; † June 26, 1839 in Vincennes , Indiana , United States ) was a French minister and missionary in the United States. He was the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Vincennes , Indiana.
I have found no Douglas connection.
The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
