Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I'm a descendant of Sholto Douglas(s) (1763-1828?) who married Mary Bruce in 1782 (Auchtermuchty, Fife), via his second son, David Douglas (1785-1856 Fife).
I’m particularly looking for any direct male descendants of this Sholto Douglas who may have taken a Y-DNA test (or be willing to do so), in order to identify his haplogroup.
I’m yet to trace any living direct male descendants in my branch but I happen to know from some other research that William Sholto Douglas (1856-1913), a prominent newspaper editor in New Zealand, was a direct male descendant of Sholto’s first son John Douglas (1783-1848 Fife).
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Sholto Douglas(s) (1763-1828?) who married Mary Bruce in 1782 (Auchtermuchty, Fife)
Tags/keywords - used to help people find you

I agree that the Newcastle Sholto is an unlikely candidate, however there are very few records for 'Sholto' births within that period, but I've now found a Shealtow Douglass born 1761 in Dull, in Perthshire who would be far more likely to fit the bill.

Perhaps he found 'Dull' a bit boring and decided to move south for the bright lights of Auchtermuchty - his 1782 marriage record states that he was from that Parish.

Best regards

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
