The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I would really appreciate any information on these two that any one has. They had a son, Hugh Douglas, 1713. I think their dates might be about 1688. If I can link these up to earlier Douglas' I can complete that branch of my family.

Regards,

Sheila

I am coming very late into this conversation regarding the Douglas family around Riccarton and I have the same problem.  Hugh Douglas b. 1713 to James Douglas & Jean Farquhar cannot be the Hugh Douglas who married Margaret Gilmour & had a daughter named Margaret in 1728.

I have the New Cumnock Baptism Register and have seen the entries for children of James Douglas & Jean Farquhar. They are William (1708), Hugh (1713), John (1715), George (1718) & Marion (1721). The 1708 entry shows that they were in Meikle Boig, 1713 residence not shown, 1715 Auchincloss, 1718 Auchencoiss(?) & 1721 Righead (sic).

I would like to find the marriage of Hugh Douglas & Margaret Gilmour which may help.  I believe that if Hugh Douglas (b.1713) was the son of James Douglas & Jean Farquhar then he would have named a son James before the one in 1755 & a daughter Jean before the one in 1748.

Best wishes

I have just read the post by Sheila Mary Jackson and I have the same quandary.  I am researching the Douglas line for my wife’s Burmeister family.  Her first husband was Leo Burmeister (1934-1996) and one of his grandmothers was Ellen Margaret Douglas (1874-1948 Australia).  She was the daughter of James Douglas (1833 Ayrshire - ? Australia).  His father was Hugh Douglas (1808 Ricarton, Ayrshire – 1889 St Quivox Ayrshire).

Hugh was the son of James Douglas (1780 Ricarton – 1841 Kilmarnock) and James was the son of Hugh Douglas (1744 New Cumnock Ayrshire - ??).

This Hugh was the son of Hugh Douglas (1713 New Cumnock - ??) married to Margaret Gilmour.

It is likely that this Hugh was the son of James Douglas (1691-1743) and Jean Farquhar (1693-) but I can’t find any confirmatory evidence.  Several family trees on Ancestry have differing data none of which is substantiated.

If anyone has any relevant data I would be very grateful.

There is an online tree that states:

August 5, 1744 Birth of Hugh Douglas New Cumnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. He married Margaret Mary Gilmour
son of
James Douglas, 13th Laird of Mains, born 1680. He maried Jean Unknown

However, I have no record of this James marrying a Jean (He married 1st Isobel Corbet and 2ndly Rebecca Wallace), nor of a son, Hugh.

The two references I provided are possibly of two different persons. I have no personal knowledge of the James Douglas/ Jean Farquhar line and was only posting found references that may or may not have some revelence. I probably should have included a disclaimer to that effect. I apologize for any potential confusion.

Thank you - William

If Jean, the daughter of James Farquhar and Jean Porterfield, was born in 1713, how can she be the mother of Marion Douglas, baptized Jun 1721 in New Cummnock, Ayrshire, Scotland? She certainly could not be the mother of Hugh, also born 1713!

Elsewhere I have seen Jean, the daughter of James Farquhar and Jean Porterfield as the wife of John White, of Neuk.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
