I use Family Tree Builder (FTB) from MyHeritage. It is free. I have 18 trees on the go, for friends, all of which I add to FTB on my PC as I research. MyHeritage offer free web-sites for up to 250 persons, and FTB and the relevant web-site sync with each other. If a tree is likely to extend beyond 250 persons I offer the "owner" of the tree the chance to pay the subscription to MyHeritage and then carry on researching and building. There is also a very good report writer app called The Complete Genealogy Reporter which can be purchased and which sits in FTB as an extension or add-in.

I have not found any faults with FTB and MyHeritage over the last 15 years and it can be as cheap or as expensive as you require.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
