This Scotti coat of arms is shown on a Douglas combined coat of arms because of a marriage.  there are several variants of this type of coats of arms for Scotti that seem to be of the same family from Italy near Lake Lugano.  Two Scotti families are shown to been from Nothern Italy.  Any link or information would be appreciated.  I am in the USA and tracing the SCOTTI name and coat of arms from Italy via  a found Scotti relative living in Switzerland whose grandmother lived in Italy with the Scotti coat of arms on her house.  I am following this certain Scotti coat of arms in my research.  Any info please forward by e-mail: navy9crew   @   sbcglobal.net   My information goes back over 30 years before computers. My Scotti family entered the USA around 1870 vis San Francisco, Ca.  then went  to Albuquerque , New Mexico around  1873 where they had a mercantile store.

Richard,

As far as the Scotti crest, I have seen it in a few different colors. (not 100% authenticated) Also, I have seen six & eight pointed stars. Amongst quite a few other motifs & countries. They are mostly all located in the, Italian armorials album. Von Scotti in the German album & de Scotti in the Bohemian nobility album.

Yes  so Have I but the 8 pointed stars seem to be more early than  the 6 pointed one.  These seem to be more Italian than not but I don't know this change in the number of points?  Thank you for your reply.

The 6 point stars are seen more than others but within England and Italy I find there are very similar coat of arms, almost the same, so I guess I will have to concentrate on Italy around  Como, Ponte Tressa, Italy for my research.  The coat of arms, same if not almost the same ,in both countries is very difficult to trace.  I may have reached a road block due to the difficulty of Italy's records of that old period.  Thank you for your time and effort as there seems to be a Douglas coat of arms like the Scotti coat of arms but each in different countries.  Good luck on your own research. Do you know of a good Heraldry book for  England and Italy that is reliable?

My book is  general in nature and not very good.

Richard,

What are some of the other family names associated with your people in the Lake Lugano area?

Francesco Scotti children --Giovan Antonio Scotti, born 1704, died Dec.7, 1774 in Como, Italy & was married to Francesca Decarlis,

Giovan A. Scotti children--Maria Margherita Scotti born Feb 17, 1738 in Lugano Sw.

Innocenzio Antonio Scotti, born in Aug6, 1740 in Lugano, Sw. married to Teresa Brientini,  born in 24 Dec.1774, Lugano , Sw.  The rest of these families were born in Switzerland.  I have 8 sheets from Gen 1 to Gen 11 in the US if you would need them  I could post this to you if you forward your mailing address to me.  Note: Francisco Scotti is the earliest I name I have. navy9crew  @  sbcglobal.net

I sent Willam Douglas several family charts  with names, if you cannot get the names from him I will look them up  for you. I will try to take a picture of the coat of arms Renzo sent me from his grandmothers house. Soon as I figure out this  phone.

Here is a suggested lineage, generated by AI with no sources:

The Douglas-Scotti family in Switzerland is a more recent offshoot of the Italian branch. According to their website, they trace their ancestry to Giovanni Battista Scotti Douglas, who was born in Piacenza in 1757 and moved to Switzerland in 1789. He married Anna Maria von Wattenwyl, a member of a prominent Bernese family, and became a Swiss citizen in 1798. He was also a successful businessman and politician, serving as a member of the Grand Council of Bern and the Swiss National Council. His descendants still live in Switzerland today, mainly in the cantons of Bern and Vaud. They are involved in various fields, such as banking, law, education, and culture. They also maintain their connection to their Scottish and Italian heritage, and are members of the Clan Douglas Society of Scotland.

There is, of course, no 'Clan Douglas Society of Scotland' which is a good indicator that this may not be a true reflection of reality.

That is a little more than I could find but it is likely a direction I could investigate.  Were you able to link any of the names I sent ?    I  have no information of Francesco Scotti except what I have sent  you on his children. So the years 1700 to  about 1600 look like hard to find.  I don't have Fransisco's wife's name nor her maiden name. I may search for Giovanni Batista Scotti Douglas in Piacenza around his birth date.  Most records back then were in Latin or Italian or which I cannot read. Thank you again for the quick reply.

I can update my profile but I am not real computer savvy when it comes to navigation of the site.  My information to you is not private nor personal so if you want to enter it go ahead.  +My first contact in Switzerland 30  years ago was Renzo  Scotti, this is what I have:  Giuseppe Antonio Scotti, b. 12 July 1778 in Brasca, SW. d. 6 Feb. 1864,  wife Maddalena Menetti b, 1774, Italy, D. 11 Oct. 1863 Sw.

Inocente Antonio Scotti, b.6 Aug. 1740 Lugano, Sw.  wife Teresa Menotti

Giovan Antonio Scotti, b. 1704, died 7 Dec 1774, wife Francesa DeCarlis.

I do have info on Francesco Scotti, no dates, I found in buried under  research---

Feancesa's  father was Gerolamo DeCarius.  Some of this old spelling  & dates may  not be 100% correct, All were from records found in Italian that I had transcribed years ago.

I have had a root around, but nothing has come up yet.
The name 'Giovanni Batista Scotti' Douglas is not uncommon, so others with the name do appear, so there is likely a connection somewhere.

Here is an example:  Giuseppe Scotti was born on month day 1888, to Giovanni Battista Scotti and Anna Scotti (born Massa).

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
