Welcome to our community, Shelly.

Spellings vary depending on who the transcriber was, but ancestors might have that spelling, and descendants have another.  It all adds to the fun - and frustration.
There were/are several different Douglas families in the West Lothian area and early records would probably not use that geographic designation.

I have discovered a bit of a muddle in one of the families that I have been researching, and am working through establishing who is who in each generation.  This I have not yet published in the online database, which is still therefore incorrect.  But I do have a Jean Douglas born in 1624 in Pumpherston, in East Lothain.

You can see some of the confused entries in the following two links from other researchers:
a.  https://www.duttongenealogy.com/getperson.php?personID=P3008&tr...
b.  https://tng.kinfolk.org/getperson.php?personID=I29662&tree=master
and also in the Douglas Archives, which is awaiting amendent:
c.  http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/famgen/getperson.php?personID=I7879... Please see the notes which highlight the variance the above two.

I hope this helps, but if you have further notes that would help my research, that would be welcome.

Yours aye,

William

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
