The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

Hi all,

While searching for early Drysdale immigrants in Colonial America, I came across a plethora of material about early Douglas Immigrants there.

As far as I can tell, the earliest American Douglas that is listed on the Douglas Archives website is:

  • William Douglas, bn in Scotland 1610. Emigrated from Scotland to America in 1640. Town clerk of New London. Mar. Ann Mattle. father of Robert (above), bn 1639.

However it seems to me that another William Duglas, a 16 year old boy on the vessel 'Margrett and John' In 1621 was possibly the first Douglas to actually arrive there and take up residence.

A brief selection of relevant source materials is shown in the image below, together with links to the site from which these sources originate.

There are more Douglases within these publications than are indicated here

Best regards

It would appear that in 1655, Captain William Douglas had his own company, had been living in Northumberland County and was recently deceased:

I think that 'The Living in Virginia' may have been a roll call following the 'Indian Massacre'.

William Douglas is amongst those listed.

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
