The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

The 1998 publication - 'History of Dollar' contains a lot of information concerning early Drysdale feuars & tenants in Dollar i.e. residents of Dollar prior to 1605 & thereafter:

https://archive.org/details/historyofdollar0000bail/page/10/mode/2up

"In 1605, probably in need for currency due to the court's move to London, the Earl [Campbell of Argyll] feued out the Mains and Bank lands to his "kyndly" - related or long resident - tenants"

There are a number of Drysdales listed, however one of these early Feuars was a "John Drysdaill, alias Gregorsoune"

This gives rise to a possible link between Drysdale, Grierson & Douglas

Also one Robert Greresoune in Drumfreis had a remission for the slaughter of Sir John Mcbrare, chaplain, in 1502 - Pitcairns criminal trials vol 1

In 1638 there is a further 'Douglas of Cashogle', Drysdale and Crichton link:

James Drysdaill, a servitor to Sir William Douglas of Cowsogall, knight, together with David Crychtoun were witness to one Mungo Park being apprehended in Leith on 2 August 1638.

Hi all,

Russell recently suggested that there could be a possible link between the Douglas and Campbel families (in the context of 1503) in that, as the Campbels (Argyll) were the Lords superior of Castle Gloom & the lands of Dollar, such a link could help explain why any outlaw Douglases would seek refuge in Dollar as newly minted 'Drysdales'.

There seem to be a few marriages outlined on the Ancestry, Familysearch & Genie websites e.g.
- Lady Margaret Douglas Moncrieff (Baroness Campbell) Marriage Estimate 1479 Sir Duncan Campbell, 2nd of Glenorchy
- Lady Margaret Moncrief Hay Campbell Baroness of Agyll married to Sir Archibald Douglas
- etc.
But as may be seen, there is conflicting info on this & it is difficult to find factual genealogy on this point.

I did however manage to find one factual source of information and again it was in 'The manuscripts of His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry' pages 11 & 12

"1497 Indenture between James Campbel of Wester Lowdon, and Elizabeth Crechtoun, spouse of the late William of Douglas of Drumlanerigh, by which it is agreed that John Campbel, son and apparent heir of the said James, shall marry Elizabeth of Douglas, daughter of the said late William of Douglas and Elizabeth Crichtoune......."

Note the Campbells of Loudoun are the oldest branch of the house of Argyll.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
