I am very new to genealogy. I jumped on Ancestry.com a few years ago to track down general information on my ancestors. Now, I am fascinated by the information I was shocked to discover.

I have checked this dozens of times, but it does, in fact, appear to me that my great-great-grandmother on my father's side was Elizabeth Boyd. My great-great-grandfather on my mother's side was Sir Thomas Douglas. This means Sir Robert Douglas is my great-great-grandfather on BOTH sides of my tree. I have tried to disprove this countless times by checking names/dates/records all the way to myself. Each time it comes up, as I have stated above. Seems far-fetched to me, but I am not able to disprove it through my research on Ancestry and other websites.

Thank you for the suggestion on the contact for the Douglas DNA group, William. I did just join the Douglas DNA group on your site; were you referring to the FTDNA Douglas group to find the contact person? I have joined my deceased cousin's kit to the Douglas group and see his George W Douglass matches there. I need to check back and see if he is now on the chart, and get some assistance from the group admin. I appreciate your help so much.

Through Elmer Douglas information, Edgar and Elmer’s parents were John Forester Douglas and Mary Powell. John Forester was born around 1840. 

Yes. This is as far back as I could find as well. I do know Edgar Howard had a twin named Elmer who is buried in McCurtain County, OK.

Thank you for your welcome, William! I'm looking forward to being involved and finding out more about my Douglas ancestors. 

You probably noticed I live in Turramurra, a suburb of Sydney, NSW, Australia. The 3xgreat grandmother I mentioned emigrated here with her husband and family in 1837. Fortunately Australia has good immigration records which helped to trace the family back to her father Robert Douglas.

Thank you for adding me and for the welcome. I am in the early stages of my journey connecting my Inglis sept to the Douglas clan. On ancestry I am at a roadblock. I was told by a native Scottish coworker about the Inglis name and history. In later years I was told by native English coworkers history of the Inglis name. Unfortunately I have no living Inglis relatives to help me answer any questions. I live on the East Coast of the US.

It has been ages since you asked for more on my family. I am told the family left Scotland from Thurso. I took my mom to visit two of the family homes. One in the Minneapolis, Minnesota region the other in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We also went to the Douglas crypt in the Oak hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. My Great, Great Grand father, amongst other family members, is buried there.

James Mitchell Douglas had his full name recorded on his birth record and on his death record, for the rest of his life he called himself James Douglas.

In early 1852 he was recorded as possibly being the Owner as well as the Master of the vessel Isle of Wight of Glasgow (Lloyds register of Ships 1852)

Thank you, not the William Douglas who once owned land at the hawkesbury region either.   Although a very interesting article as the name Mary Grove's is the same (believe it or not).  To an ancestor from the other side of the unconnected family in the UK.... once again thank you 

Thank you! I have Bob's book on the descendants of Tom and Phoebe Douglas but I didn't know about his more recent manuscript. I'll follow up with Bob about that resource!
