The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I am attempting to locate descendants of the author, Norman Douglas. I am told that his son, Robert Sholto Douglas, known as Robin (born 1900 in Italy), had a wife and two children in South Africa - at the time he re-married!

Can anyone help…

Hi - The person he re-married was my mother!  Yes, the marriage was bigamous.  However, I am wondering where this information came from?  Once I know that I hope to be able to add something further to assist you.

I have on my tree a Bernhard Burmester,( son of George Burmester = Gertrude Groenewald,)  married Thirwall Sholto-Douglas  ---their son, Paul Burmester, was living in Durban circa 1995 I have his address at that time)  -- John Hill

Thirwall - or Thirlwall?

Jenny,

I replied to your origninal email on 8th February.

I will send again - right now! Was wondering why you did not get back to me!

Wikipedia lists two children, Louis Archibald (Archie) and Robert Sholto (Robin).
However, I also have two different children:
a son, Malcolm, who gained the Hunua seat in the 1978 general election in New Zealand, but lost it after an electoral petition.
and
a daughter, Mary, who married Edward Percy Fairburn.

It seems that Malcom was not this Norman's son, but son of Norman Vazey Douglas.

Is Mary also misplaced?

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
