The Douglas Archives

A collection of historical and genalogical records

I joined this group in an effort to find some answers regarding my brick wall -- where did my ancestors come from and when did they come.  They are first found in Maine in 1731 when James Douglas and Margaret Elliot filed an intention to marry.  I have a pretty thorough record of the family from then to the present.  But would welcome any additional information.

For those who have not read it, Jane's description of the early days in Maine can be found in her website, and makes good reading -  http://douglasfamilyalbum.tripod.com/douglas/american.html

Hi Jane, My family of Douglases decended from the John Douglas brought to Viriginia as an indentured slave from the docks of England where he was supposed to be claiming an Uncle's fortune. He had been sent to England from Scotland and was kidnapped and put on a man of war ship and brought to the US when he was around 8 to 10  years old.

My imidiate family can trace back to the 1600 and 1700's settling in Litchfield Maine. We have an E. Douglas that was (Edwin) I believe a decedant of John.
We are fortunate enough to have a written record of the pastor in Litchfield when there were but 5 or 6 famlies in Litchfield. It tells of the hardships of Maine winters and of Edwin Douglas being part of that.

When John left Virigina at 18 or 21 he came to New England and married a native american of the Pasamaquady tribe. From there we split up over most of New England according to family records and "stories" . You may be part of this family. Carman Douglas

Carmen,   Seems there are several John Douglas entries that had a rich uncle.   I am from the John Douglas line of Middleborough, Mass. that is documented in the J Lufkin Douglas work started in 1867 and finished in 1890.   Here is a link to that geneology.    https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89062865282&view=1up&...

Page 22 starts the story of John.  My grandfather, Isaiah Willis Douglas, is listed as entry 1214 descendant from John.

I have been trying to trace back into Scotland, John's parents but all we really have is a birth year of 1695.  There are geneology hits to a John born in 1695 in Lanarkshire to a William Douglas-Hamilton and Christian Jargon but after them direct ties get rather sketchy.  My daughter-in-law was telling me of a John Douglas from Virginia that settled in Jamestown.   That may be your line but I don't think it is mine.

I see there is not much activity on this site but maybe we and get if moving again.

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
