A collection of historical and genalogical records
Hi All,
I am new to the site so take it easy on me ;0)
I wonder if anyone out there has common ancestors and can help me grow the my branch of the Douglas family tree beyond WIlliam Douglas and Ann Elder.
My Grandmother, Johan Rosie Douglas married my Grandfather Ovila Leduc on 31 Dec 1918 at Balloan Farm, Cawdor, Nairn while Ovila was stationed in the Cawdor area as a Canadian Soldier. Johan was born on 18 January 1900 at Blackheath, Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. They settled in Canada after the war.
Johan's parents were George Alexander Douglas and Isabella MacKay. George was born a twin to Patrick John Douglas on 12 June 1867 at Lyth, Bower, Scotland.
Their parents were Donald Douglas and Elizabeth Rosie. Donald was born in 1833, Halkirk, Scotland.
Donald's parents were George Douglas and Janet Mill. George was born in 1806 in Caithness, Scotland

Hi Ellie,
It is nice to meet you and connect with a long lost Douglas cousin. Thank's for your offer of information which I'll gladly accept. My private email is duke@hkpdesign.com
Sincerely
Harold
Hi Harold
Ann didn't go to Canada. She stayed in Caithness and married John Brims, a farmer of Reiss near Wick. She had thirteen children, one of whom was my Granny. Two of Ann's sons went to Canada, one to Halton and the other, I think to Toronto. When the wife of one of them died, their sister Ann went to Canada to look after his children.
Janet Douglas was widowed around 1846 and left with a large family. She applied for Poor Relief to support her children. A record of this is kept in the Halkirk Parish book in North Highland Archive in Wick.
The only date I have for William Douglas and Ann Elder is their married date which was on 23rd Feb 1793 in Halkirk, Scotland.
Hi Katathenty,
Nice to meet you. Sorry for my late response as I missed your post. Thanks for the information on Ann and Janet. I have the same marriage date for William and Ann. As posted in this site's archives, I believe William was born in Harpsdale, Thurso in 1775 and died before 1841. Ann was born in Reay, Thurso in 1780 and died in 1841.
I understand their children were: John, Alexander, Hugh, William (died before 1801), George, Margaret, William and Magnus.
Thanks for the info on Ann. I do have her marrying John Brims on 19 Jun 1870 in Thira, Bower and I have 8 children listed:
Ann, John, Donald, Isabella, Janet, Elizabeth, Alexander and Maggie
Do you have any info on these children and the one's I'm missing? Which one was your Granny?
Thanks for reaching out.
Harold from Canada

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.
Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.
Professions also help.
'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.
Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
