It has been suggested to me that Samuel Marksbury Jr's wife may have been Hannah Mumford Wynn, and also Hannah Douglas.

Whilst I seek clarity, it all seems murkier!

Has anyone got good DNA results?

The Markbury name is not made up at all but has Norman beginnings and an eventual migration into Western England.  Samuel came from Somerset England which there is a town of Marksbury.  The Marksburys also have an English Coat of Arms.  What I am reading, there is no coloration between  the Douglas's and the Marksburys.  I don't understand why Ancestry.com would tie a Marksbury with a Douglas but who knows?  It is still a mystery.  I've read there are DNA matches to Douglass' and yours is not.  There is also a town called Markby on the east coast of England where the family first look up residence or Lords of the Manor as they say.  Going back on Ancestry I do have relatives from England but I have yet to find anyone from Scotland besides the Douglas line which is sketchy in it's truth.

Hi Ryan,  Thank you for sending me a lot of valuable info.  Here is how I'm connected to Samuel 3 per Ancestry.  Starting with my Grandfather, all Marksburys' : Chenault 1908-1975 B. KY, Edward 1862-1938 B. KY, Overton 1833-? B. KY. William 1790-1849 B. Virgina, Samuel 3 1740-1812 B. Virgina, Samuel 2 1700-1749 B. Virgina, Samuel 1 This is where it get sketchy, 1680?-1745 B, Somerset England ?  Then it has his father as William Douglas 1637-1695 B. Scotland, Mother Isabel Douglas 1642-1691 B. Scotland.  It goes a few more generations back with Douglass' .

Now if we are related which it seems we are because the grandfathers match up, you proved we are not from the Douglas line through your DNA analysis, and thank you for that BTW because being female I couldn't take those DNA tests.  I have not tried to get ship records or census records in Somerset England at that time, have you?  A friend of mine started my family tree on ancestry and I'm  considered an "editor" on her account so I don't know if I can invite you to view the tree on her account.

I did get my DNA analyzed through Ancestry but it is so vague, 51% Great Britain( real vague ), 20% Scandinavian, 18% Western European but it doesn't get down to specific regions.

From what you have indicated I"m thinking more and more I'm probably mostly English in that 51% of Great Britain.

Anyway, thank you so much for all the info.

Best, Renee

Thank you for all the great information on my family history!

The Marilyn Monroe thing is wild!  Keep digging and you'll never know what one will find.

I really wish you could see my Ancestry.com account.  Some of the names that you sent to me are on the tree and others are not, my grandfather for instance.  Here we go with another scandal.

My grandfather, Chenault Marksbury, was born May 16th, 1908 in Kentucky somewhere.

I have listed that his parents, Annie Burns Scalon born in Kentucky 1967 D. Mercer county Ky and Edward Marksbury B. 1862 in Mercer Co. Ky. D. 1938 Harrodsburg, KY
It is rumored that these are not actually his parents but his grandparents which would make sense if you look at the dates.  That was pretty long in the tooth to have kids back then, but maybe that's just me.  It states that Bessie Marksbury his "sister" born, 1891had him out of wedlock and tried to make it hush hush.  He did in fact leave the family in his late teens not to return and did not discuss his family at all.  He died when I was five and my mother didn't have any information about her grandparents on his side.

That's all the info. I have though.  Good luck finding out about the Native American lineage.  Was there any evidence that Samuel 1 married a Native American woman when he came over from England?

Thank you again for all the info! Wow!

Yes, this is my family group which there is no doubt.  It is a mystery about the Samuel that immigrated from England to Virginia in the late 1600's.

Following my lineage on Ancestry.com it has Samuel being the son  of James Douglas and Margaret Stewart of Scotland.  James's father William was the First Marquess of Queensbury.  His birth date states it was 1680 in Somerset England but supposedly he came to the US about that time.  Samuel did have brothers and at least one sister and they all had the last name Douglas which I did find odd.

It is speculated that Samuel came from Somerset England in the town of Marksbury England.  Perhaps  when he came to the US he said he was Samuel of Marksbury and there was confusion?  I don't know.

Truthfully I have not taken the time and money necessary to research this further although, personality wise I feel I could definitely be a descendant of the Douglas family!

I did get the DNA analysis done and it said I was 51% from Great Britain but doesn't indicate between Scotland and England of course so there is no way of me truly knowing without a lot more digging.

In my gut, I feel Scottish, and that's good enough for me!

The Marksbury's in the US I have little interest in.  My grandfather was born in Kentucky where a lot of Marksbury's are, but then left for the Marines as soon as he could and ended up in New York State and made his family here.  How much more I'm really going to research on the matter I'm not sure.

Thank you so much for your email.  If you have any ideas about how I could find out more about the Marksbury/Douglas line I would appreciate it.  Being a newbie at this kind of thing I don't know where to start.

Best,

Renee

Samuel migrated to America around the late 1680's, settling in Prince William County, VA. He married around 1700, possible to an indian woman. He had one son in 1711, and named him Samuel Marksbury, Jr.

Samuel Marksbury Sr died in Prince William County, VA in Nov 1745. After his father's death, Samuel Marksbury Jr moved to Amherst County, VA. He married, but his wife's name is unknown. He had 2 known children, Samuel and Prudence.

Samuel Marksbury Jr died in Amherst County, VA in 1784. His son Samuel Marksbury III was born in Prince William County, VA in 1740. Is this your family group ?

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
