This is a bit embarrassing since we have commented back and forth a bit, but i have just now noticed that the family page is Listed as "Douglas of Devrock", rather than the correct "Douglas of Dervock" as is the location in N. Ireland and listed in Burke's.

Sorry do not have the time to add to this but Percy Douglas junior was in the royal flying corps during the first world war he had a Sister Flora and a younger brother Robert Flora left no decendants Robert left a son but do not have an knowledge of Him and I am the son of Heather Roberts (nee Douglas) daugher of Percy Douglas

the Rev Percy Douglas was my Great grandfather and his wifes name was Annie

Ernest Alfred Douglas was my grandfather,born 1903 in Winkfield Berkshire,died in 1988.As far as I know,he lived in Berkshire all his life. His regiment was the 17/21st Lancers,and I would assume this would be in the 1920's.

I have no knowledge of previous family prior to my grandfather,other than a comment made by my grandmother when I was a child,who mentioned that my grandfathers family came from Bray near Maidenhead Berkshire.

Hi William- I learned yesterday that one of the many pills I take is a 'black box' pill and I was told yesterday to cease taking it. It has had bad side effects. I have exhausted my resources to find my 4th Great Grandfather, Alexander Douglas’s parents.  I have a little more information than I sent you before and I may have sent a wrong date before.  Can you point me in a direction to find my Great Great Great Great Grandfather and mother?  Here is the information I know.

1. My 3rd Great Grandfather was Alexander Douglas, who was born about 1811, but I do not know where.

2. He married Catharine Gardner on Nov 23, 1846 in Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland. I have the marriage record, but does not indicate his parents.

3. I did find Catharine Gardner’s parents.  They were Samuel Gardner and Catharine Rodgers.  Catharine Douglas was born June 3, 1818 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

4.  Alexander Douglas and Catharine Gardner had a daughter, Isabella Douglas, was born  Feb 1, 1847.

5.  Alexander Douglas and Catharine Gardner also had another daughter, Janet Douglas.  I do not think there are any other children.

6.  There was a census in 1841 that showed Alexander, Catharine, Isabella, and Janet Douglas living in the Village of Whitburn.

6. Alexander Douglas died some time between 1847 and June 12, 1868.

7. Isabella Douglas married John Pow on June 12, 1868 and the marriage document indicated that Alexander Douglas was deceased.  John Pow and Isabella Douglas were my 2nd Great Grandparents.

Any information would be helpful.  I did look through every Alexander Douglas listed in Douglas history and there is no matching record.

I also forgot to send you a picture of the Alexander Douglas’s where one of them must be my Alexander Douglas parents.  I already excluded Cathrine McKenzie and Alexander Douglas as parents.  I looked in the Douglas Archive and the Alexander McKenzie/Douglas dates and children don’t line up, so I excluded them. One of the others must be the parents of my Great Great Great Grandfather Alexander Douglas. How do I confirm which one of these line up with my other clues?  Is there a site or a phone number I could call in Scotland to find out?

One thing I have discovered with relatively high confidence, based on the 1773 will of William Douglas of Rowan County, NC, is that David Douglas was John Douglas’s uncle instead of his grandfather as stated on the John Douglas of Mississippi page.

The other possibility I am considering is that John was not orphaned...just because there are no records to verify it. I’m not sure where the family story originated that he was orphaned. Work is ongoing in that area.

I am trying to figure out who John’s parents were and why they may have died, and then try to trace his grandfather William back to Ireland or Scotland.

I am also trying to figure out who John Douglas was married to before Nancy Denman Walden.

Will update if I find anything else out!

I don't have a transcript that was officially done, but I can try to transcribe it if necessary.

Below is the transcript of William Douglas's will (to the best of my ability - I highlighted the names mentioned for easy identification):

"

In the Name of God Amen. I William Douglass of Rowan County in the Provence of North Carolina being sick in body but thanks be to God being in perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and Testament. First I commit my soul to God who gave it me. And my body I recommend to the dust to be buried at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the last day it shall be raised again. And as touching my worldly affairs I leave and bequeath unto my lawfull and beloved wife Mary her livelihood? [illegible] the plantation and in the house I now live in during her natural life and my movable estate I allow? to be sold according to law which I leave to her except ten pounds which I leave to my daughter Elizabeth. Then I leave and bequeath unto my beloved sons David and Solomon the plantation I now live on to be divided equally between them, they paying and equal part of all expenses accruing on said land when the office will or may be opened. I also allow my son Solomon the end I now live on. I leave and bequeath unto my grandson John one year old horse colt [illegible] of my grey mare, and unto my grandson William I leave and bequeath one spring colt Sorrel’s? having a white mane and tail, and unto my grand-daughter Mary Traverse I leave a two year old heifer coulered red and white. Lastly I leave and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary all the money now due to my estate after all my lawfull debts is paid. Thank you William for your signpost to Gilbert Douglas in Glenrassie. He could be the uncle of my William Douglas who was born in Penninghame in 1679. It's good to know of others interested in Penninghame and Minnigaff parishes and especially about Bob Henry. Thank you too for all the work you and others have put into the Douglas Archives - this has been a great launchpad for me in trying to make sense of my many Douglas DNA matches. It is the best site of its kind that I have come across.

Looking across my matches on Ancestry and those of a couple of Johnstone cousins, we have upwards of 60 or 70 Douglas in groups relating to a number of Douglas lines. The largest group of matches is formed by descendants of Gilbert Douglas through William Douglas in Barsalloch and Grishil McKeand - with the added complication that we also have matches with the descendants of their contemporary family in Midlothian of William Douglas in Dalhousie and Janet Witherspoon. 

The next largest group relates to William Douglas (1610-1682) who lived in New London, Connecticut - which just goes to show how robust these Douglas genes are!

Matches with a descendant of Isabella Douglas (1723-1795, married Benjamin Fortner) that piqued my interest to look further into Douglas connections, as did Mary Douglas (1693-1726, married William Crawford). There are more, such as descendants of Domini Douglas (1732-1807) in Vermont, Clara and Clementina Douglas of Dornock, and several Drumlanrig and Kelhead Douglas matches which I need to explore further.

I need to pull together some questions to pursue specific lines. Again, thank you William.

Yes, about 1 mile along the Banbury  Road in a northwest direction from the crossroads at the church in Lower Beddington. It is at the crossroads in the southeast corner.

William - thank you for the note.  We are familiar with the Georgia Douglases project.  The Joseph Douglas (1) listed is my wife's 3rd GrGrandfather.  Currently believe Joseph Douglas (1) was brother to John & William.  Have not found any proof yet of Joseph (1) having son named Joseph Douglas (2) as cited in Georgia Douglases project.  No reference to Joseph (2) or heirs in Joseph (1) last will.  My wife's brother's DNA analysis (Y-DNA37) show a R1a1a Group ID (Drumlanrig-Queensberry line), with an extremely close match to that of another Joseph Douglas  b. 4 Apr1773 in Chester Co., SC /  d. 16 Jun1845 in Meriwether Co., GA.  George Washington Douglas (1790-1852) [John's son] was b. in NC and d. in Copiah, MS. is almost an identical match too.  FYI -  Joseph (1) did have an older unknown dau. who married John C. Hill (d. 1835) and had two children Miranda Ann Hill [Cribbs] & John Cummings Hill Jr. (1836-1868).  She died prior to Joseph (1) death in 1843.  Some believe John & Joseph (1), father was David Douglas (c1740-1822) who was the son of Wm. (1715-1773 ) & Mary Douglas(s).  We are getting closer in our search thanks to the DNA analysis and leads from your Douglas Archives.  Thanks for the help!

William - a clarification to my earlier note.  George Washington Douglas's father, John, is the John Douglas (13) cited in the Georgia Douglases project.  The nearly identical DNA sequence readout for my wife's brother to George's sequence would serve as strong confirmation that John Douglas (13) and Joseph Douglas (1), both born in NC and migrated to GA, were most likely brothers, along with William Douglas (8).  I hope others will see this note and contribute.  Again, thanks for your help in all of this.

William - One more clarification.  I went back to look at the Georgia Douglases web page.  I see they have a Joseph Douglas, son of Marshall.  We knew him as "Joab", so this is indeed the same person.  My wife's family is from this branch of the family (Joab's son Bart).

Yes, they certainly did have adventurous lives! I guess it was true for lots of people back then, not only in the "Wild West" but around the world generally.

Andrew Douglas was born in 25 Sept 1838 in Girvan, Ayrshire Scotland  to James Douglas and Catherine Logan. James Douglas was born in 1806 in Girvan, Scotland.  Catherine Logan was born in 1816 in County Iyr, Ireland. This is as far back as I have gotten. As I know very little about the Deacon William and his family, I am very eager to learn more.  I am searching for his grandaughter Elizabeth Douglas who married Stephen Dewolfe, and then married Henry Rowland. I have found a chart that she died 1705 not possible as the same notation stated her Dewolfe children born 1706 and 1708, also another that she died 1747.  I am at presently reading the histories of the villages of colonical Connecticut for any reference to the families.

Below are the detals I have on 'my james' :-)

My G Grandfather was James Douglas (b1832-?). I think he was a carpenter. His first wife was Elisabeth MacDonald(b1830 - d1870); & they had 7 children ; Jane b1855; Margaret b1857; John b1860; James b1861-d1922;Alexander b1862; Sophia b1864; Robert b1867 . His second wife, my G Grandmother was Christina Fletcher (1843 -?). They had 3 children Janearina b1878, Justin b1881 & Edward Simpson b1885-d1956, my grandfather. He married my grandmother Helen Cameron & he was a professional golfer who migrated to New Zealand where he raised his family, 2 daughters Marie & Dorothy (my mother)

I am not sure how to reply.  William Douglas, yes, I believe we have touched base before.   I have a typed out "history" written by my Aunt Lucille Douglas.  It's a bit romanticized.  I have some pictures of ancestors.   My Father Angus Dearborn Douglas was born in...…….Dearborn Michigan.    Due to an unfortunate tendency to have female children, I am the last of this Line.   It's too bad, I can trace back to 1638.   If there is a way to maneuver on here I would love to scan and post my pictures and stories.   It may be of interest to Douglases in Massachusetts, Ohio and Michigan.

My Major James Douglas was born Springwood Park Roxburgh 25/9/1768.He was sent out to India as a 16 year old cadet in East India Company.He had four children to a Indian Bibi.Rachel Douglas born1797 Bombay, Catherine born 1799 Bombay, Mary born1801 Bombay and James born1804 Bombay.

Major James Douglas died 1814 at his estate Edenside Kelso.

I have tried to find his parents and all I can find is a baptism for 22/3/1769 Ancrum Roxburgh father given as James Douglas.

Being born at Springwood Park the home of the Douglas  nobility.

Rachael Douglas married James White a surgeon in Edinburgh 27/2/1821 at Saint Cuthberts and her brother James Douglas was also a surgeon.

They migrated to Australia with their children and her sisters and brother on the Kohinoor in 1852.

The Thomas born in 1824 is mysterious. I'm confident that he married Margaret Smollen, who I found in Irish records as born in 1822 in Collinstown, Westmeath, Ireland. According to the 1850 census, their son Thomas F. Douglass was born in 1848 in Ireland, their next child, Mary, was born in Philadelphia in 1850, so that brackets the years they could have emigrated fairly closely. That 1850 census lists his profession as tailor. Thomas (1824) died before the 1860 census (Margaret is listed as widowed in other documents, and I have a record of his burial here in Philadelphia.

There are two other Douglasses that died that same month and are buried in the same place - Thomas (born 1857) and Elizabeth (born 1832). They might be part of the puzzle, or they might be just a coincidence. 

What I don't have is any idea of where in Ireland they came from. So going backward, which is what I'm trying to do now, what I have is more circumstantial. Thomas could actually be born in County Cork in 1827, but it looks more likely to be  Clones, Monaghan, where I found baptismal records from 1827 that shows he was born in 1824. From there, there's a Thomas born in 1802, married to Fanny Litle, who is my best guess at Thomas's father, given everything, but now I manage to be both out-on-a-limb and up against a brick wll.

I am  busy compiling my family tree at the moment. I have all of the documentation  back to the 1300's positive back to 1669 with William Douglas who was the son of William (4th of Kirkness) Douglas. My Scottish ancestory started with John Douglas 1715 who moved to North Yorkshire and the family ended up in Seaham Harbour near Sunderland. Which is where I am from.

Hello, William and thanks for the welcome. I don't understand enough about the DNA stuff yet, but it's interesting. On my Dickey side, my haplogroup is I-M253. I don't have any Douglases there though that I recall.

On my mother's side, I have a Robbins whose mother was a Merrill and her grandmother was a Douglas, supposedly descended from William Douglas (1610 - 1682), but her haplogroup is H1.

Still trying to figure out how I can connect all of the pieces.

It seems my ancestor changed his name from James Affleck to James Douglas somewhere between 1883 and 1895. I am somewhat surprised and extremely dissapointed to find this out but intrigued also. There does not seem to be a link to the Douglas name before this as yet. Thank you for your help and this site.

Hello,  I am very pleased to have been admitted to the Douglas Archives.   The info I have is that late eighteen/early nineteen hundred, there was an outbreak of  ??? in Edinburgh and Caroline Douglas was sent to Robert Harden, Station Master in Kilsyth.  Her father had a Saddler's shop in the Grassmarket, but I haven't beenable to find anything on this.  Someone from the Registrar's came through and told them they were related to the Black Douglas.  They named their cottage Douglas Cottage and recently the name was changed.  I hope this will help and if I can find any more info I will let you know.  I find this all so interestin g and meaningful.  Thank you.  Isabel

William, Curtiss Finch Douglass was a lawyer and judge in Noroton Heights, CT. He was my great grandfather, probably would have been in his prime during around 1900. He's the oldest known Douglass my family is aware of. I've not started research into it.

Information for Terence Douglas from 1821 Ireland census says living in Bective, County Meath, Ireland, former with wife Mary and children Edward, Mary and Patrick.  Edward had birth record born in Navan, Meath, Ireland in 1800 with parents Terence Douglas and Mary Murray.  I am trying to track the Ireland ancestors.

I had noticed that there were two different sets of parents listed for William Douglas. Is there any way to find out for sure? I'm happy to do the detective work, if it's even possible to find the answer. As soon as lockdowns are lifted I am going to be headed for Wigton, Edinburgh, Cockpen, and a few other locations to do some research.

Thank you for allowing me to join the group. I am trying to trace the Ancestors of James Douglas my 3x great grandfather, born we think in 1801 in Dundalk, County Lough, Southern Ireland.

My research so far has taken the following route. I knew that my maternal Great Grandfather was Frederick Douglas Born1869, as evidenced by family chat and old family documents. The1871 Census showed him living in Berkshire with his father William Douglas born 1843 in Standlake, Oxfordshire, together with his mother Harriet and his siblings. I then found William in the 1851 census living in the St Mary Magdalen area of Oxford showing his father James Douglas, then aged 50, occupation coal labourer, and his mother Jane.  James's mother-in-law Susan Douglas Crapper, aged 88, was also living with them.. They had 11 children together and stayed in Oxford for the rest of their lives.  He died at the age of 64.  We have not managed to find any formal records of the Crapper family. James recorded his birthplace as Dun Dock (Dundalk) Ireland.

Its at that point I’ve hit a brick wall and would be delighted to hear from anyone who’s research has come across a Douglas family in Ireland.
