Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I am interested in the Douglas family of Dallas, Morayshire in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

My 4xgreat grandfather Robert Douglas, bc 1755, was a tanner in Edinburgh when he married Margaret Letheny in 1794. Around 1799, with two small children, they moved to Forres, Morayshire, where my 3xgreat grandmother Jean Douglas was born in 1807.

I wonder if there was a family connection with Morayshire that caused the family to move to Forres.
Is it possible my Robert Douglas was the Robert Douglas born in Dallas in 1757 to Robert Douglas and Anna Grant of Craigroy?
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Robert Douglas, bc 1755, possibly in Dallas, Morayshire
Tags/keywords - used to help people find you
Morayshire, Forres, Dallas, tannery, tanner, Sydney

Robert Douglas is probably the best known native of Dallas. He was born at Aultahuish in 1871 and received his early education at Dallas School. He must have been a brilliant pupil since, almost unheard of in those days for someone from Dallas, he then attended Elgin Academy. There was no transport so he had to lodge in Elgin during the week, walking the 14½ miles to and from his home at the beginning and end of each week.

From Elgin he went to Aberdeen University (receiving his MA degree), then Glasgow University (receiving his MD). He practiced as G P for a number of years both in Scotland and England but later returned to university, this time at St. Andrews, and received his DPH.

After qualifying at St Andrews University he returned to Moray. He was appointed Medical Officer of Health for Moray in 1911 and held this post until his retirement in 1942. He died in Aberdeen in 1948.

He was passionate about his Moray homeland and wrote a number of books about the area, including “The Lossie” and “The Parish Of Dallas”. To many, he was “The Historian of Dallas”.

Robert Douglas M.A., M.D., DPH.

To answer your other questions:

I'm not aware of that Robert Douglas. He could be part of my family but I am not sure. My research from 1837 on focuses on my Douglas line that came out to Sydney, Australia, in that year.

Yes, that is part of my tree on WikiTree, though the links that far back on the Douglas line are only suggested as "likely/not confirmed". My known Ancestor, Robert Douglas, born abt 1755, and his descendants, are here:

I am correcting Aberdeenshire to Moray.

Is this your tree?

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
