Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
My fifth great-grandfather was a professional soldier who's family probably came from Scotland to Sweden and then to Finland (1721). He belonged to the officers of his Regiment. Name: Jonas Jerfgreen or Jergreen. The last name has at least been changed and it is said that it is impossible to find out the original, at least it has not been found in the Regiment's papers. The FTDNA Y line gives a distance of 0/12, 1/25 and 4/37 to the Douglass family who lived/live in the following states: Washington (not D.C.), Iowa, Oregon and Tennessee. They probably immigrated to the US from Ireland.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?
Lady Elizabeth Douglas of Angus 1398-1458
dna haplotype
I-M253

1580 , wow - none of my research goes back that far without getting real iffy . Clarks are a difficult  bunch to sort out . My earliest  Clark [maternal line] appears on Ancient  planters list. A Ancient Planter was a colonist in Virginia who migrated before 1616, remained for at least three years and paid their passage, however my Paternal line are the Clarks I am looking for in your neck of the woods .

Sweden recruited many Scots into their armies, and many did well.  I think the recruitment drive coincided with internal problems in Scotland, and going to Sweden (and Finland) was an opportunity to escape.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
