Profile Information

Which Douglas line are you researching? Dates and places help making connections.
I likely descend from a line of the Douglases of Cavers (and baronets of Friarshaw/Springwood Park), who emigrated to Washington, DC in the late 1860s (after two generations in Liverpool after leaving Scotland).

Certain family members I am looking for more details on include an Archibald Harvey Douglas (born circa 1806) in Liverpool. Any help would be fantastic.
Who is your earliest known Douglas ancestor?

Hi Paul,

I have had a quick look for Archibald in my usual places (Freecen, Familysearch, ScotlandsPeople etc) and would tend to agree with William's info - in particular, the 1841 census indicates his birthplace as Scotland (not Liverpool).

I also tidied up Archibald's tree on family search and it now looks like this:

A couple of pdfs of census info

Archibald Harvey Douglas 1871 census

Archabald Douglas, England and Wales, Census, 1841_

Archabald Douglas & family 1861 Census Lowton Lancashire

I also printed off the wedding record Image from Familysearch:

There are other source materials available on Familysearch

Best regards

Welcome to the network, Paul.

Another researcher is also interested in a Douglas who died in India; Captain Charles Douglas was killed in Dehli in the Indian Mutiny in 1857. He was commandant of the Royal Guard, but little else is known about him.

We have been unable to trace his line back further than his grandfather (who was also his wife's grandfather), Maj-gen Robert Douglas, b. Abt 1744, d. 7th June 1798.

Get in touch if I can help in any way.

William

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
