The Salamander in Douglas Heraldry

I have long wondered about the origin of the salamander that appears in Douglas heraldry and recalled that there was an article in the Australian newsletter many years ago.

Today, researching early uses of the stars on our armorials, particularly those of the Douglas Scotti, I stumbled across a couple of French 'blasons' with stars, one of which also had a salamander.

I made a re-visit to the article and found that the salamander is used in several French armorials.

We think that there may be a Flemish origin of the stars on the Douglas coats of arms, but could there be a French link as well?

He was the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Vincennes , Indiana.
I have found no Douglas connection.
