Hello All-- Been a member here for awhile but never posted or did anything so here it is. A new day!

My DOUGLAS side is based in Virginia (Northern Neck)----and the people who work on this side are all stuck int eh same place. SO here it goes---

RANDAL(L) DOUGLAS(S), Sr. died about 1730 in Richmond County.

We know he had three sons---John Douglas born 1701 in St. Stephens Parish and Died in 1778

Randal(l) Douglas (s) born 1703  no death date

Thomas Douglas born 1706

Their mother was Elizabeth ???? who died about 1709in New Farham Parish

We know he arrived sometime between 1655 and 1705 and never located his name on any registers

He is named in the will of RICE WILLIAMS

His sons --John and Randall were sent to serve with Thomas Wiliams and his wife Frances

In 1722 Randall witnessed a property sale between Francis Settle and Rice & Mary Williams

That is where we are-----

Hello again Jennifer,

We met previously on Ancestry.  I am glad to see that you are still working on the Douglas ancestry.  I have not found any information previous to Randal Douglas.  The only thing I found new is a document that mentions a Thomas Douglas, possibly brother to John.  I thought I had stumbled on something, and maybe I have, but there is an inconsistency.  According to this document, the said Thomas is a son of Randolph Douglas, not Randal.  That leads to two questions, is that an error in the document, or are Randal and Randolph Douglas the same person?  I don't think I have even put that info on Ancestry yet.  I will get it to you if you like.  Can I still contact you through Ancestry?

I am glad to see that you are still working at it.  Good for you!!

My best

When searching through records or gravestones in Scotland, it is common to find a person described either 'of', a place or 'in' a place or 'at' a place. These words are of considerable importance and are still in legal use in Scotland.

When a person is described as being 'of' a place, this means that the person is the owner of the property, does not pay a feu duty to anybody, and in fact is the feudal superior of that property. Not long ago there was a spate of small land owners and farmers who had acquired their own property, and in Scotland were entitled to be called Barons. This led to the familiar term of the cloth cap Barons. If a person owns their land in Scotland, it means that they, as owners will be recorded in the Sasine Records of Scotland, and gives another source of infomation for the searcher.

If a person is described as being 'in' property, this a means that this person is a tenant to a feudal superior and is not the owner of the property. This can be misleading as sometimes persons 'in' a place have quite vast estates but of course are tenants because they are renting their estate from a feudal superior.

When a person is described as being 'at' a place, this means he could be a lodger to a tenant, perhaps renting some property from the tenant, or even being exactly a lodger in someone else's property.

Ministers were usually very important persons in their parish, but correctly they were described as being 'at' a parish because they did not own it, they did not pay a rent, but were given the Manse and Glebe to live in by the superior in early days and later by the Kirk Session of the particular parish.

About Douglas land near the Hermitage Castle. Robert Elwald (Ellot-Elliot) 10th chief received lands of Redheugh and Larriston, plus more from Archibald 'Bell the Cat' 5th Earl of Angus near the end of the 15th century. Gorrenberry was owned by a William Elwald, which with other landholders Scot(t)-Ker(r)-Gledstanes to assist in the passing of these lands to Robert Elwald, family squire. Witeness included Crosar-Crozier, Forstar-Foster, Game-Graham-Graeme, but no Armstrong. It is my understanding that the 'Bell the Cat' may have lost favor with the monarchy and had to depose of the lands. Some of his lands seem to go to brother-German, Willaim Douglas of Cavers. Wm Elwald-Ellot moved onto i.e., MacPatrickhope, which means son of Patrick Hepburn's valley referred to as Bothwell, because? of obtainment of other Douglas lands of Bothwell. It is felt that Wm Elwald-Ellot line were of land manages, and did measurement of lands, and that is why ownership of Gorrenberry. Reference in on the rescue of Kinmont Willie, buried in Morton Parish cemetery previous to Half-Morton, referred to as Goodman of Gorrenberry, but lived on lands passed to Wm Douglas of Cavers then the Hepburn (Bothwell), then the Buccleuch-Scotts. Though Walter Scott may say that Sir Gilbert Eliott of Stobs was in on the rescue, it could have been his grandfather Gilbert, who had a son named William, which married into the Harden Scotts received a big dowry of land passed to Gilbert to become Sir of Stobs, refer to him as 'Gib of the golden garters' because of his sizable dowry.  Those Scott sure had a lot of trouble with Sir Gilbert's granddad of Redheugh, married a sister to Buccleuch, then a son William married a cousin. Let's say it was not incest, then these people living on Larriston lands would feud with the Armstrong, in 'Lock the Door Larriston'. Thomas Armstrong of Mangerton, had land of Billhope to the west of Gorrenberry. Though the rescue of Kinmont Willie seem to work out for the Gorrenberry family, not so well when Elwald-Ellot road with Thomas', younger brother Johnnie of Gilnockie. Gives people a distrust towards the Scottish Monarchy. No wonder Wee Jock of Parck stabbed Bothwell, across the Hermitage (Riddle?) from Redheugh, where 29th chief Margaret Eliott (Stobbs spelling) now resides.

Note; to everyone, by multiple name this shows that a lot of genealogical research has been done. Virginia is a stepping off point from all points west in America. Scotland to the Ulster stepping stone then onto America, is how many English speaking America enter. From Germany to East Anglia, England is also a migration of Anglo-Scots. Surnames which do not migrate stay the same. Migrating surname evolve split, and merge. If language is changed from Gaelic to Anglo-English there can be a big change in the name. The fighting takes place on the border, and the polarization of ideologies take place on both sides with not agreement but with a polarization in disagreement. Americans do not have a monopoly on the democracy of pitching and the Germans do not have a monopoly of polarized idealism. The German Wiki seems to be maintaining Clan Elliot history I feel better than the English Wiki, which kicked me off. The Germans excepted a link to Proto-Germanic DNA.

In genealogy for many families I a thousand feet away from the target and they are next to it, so when they give me family information I accept it as correct. Never can be smarter then them on their own family, and all they are is looking for is a different point of view, so they can try it out and hopefully for them find more family.

With the computer and up the family tree being binary, but down the family tree is more than a binary progress, on in a few generations is related to many people likely around the world. With mom's dad Austria-Hungarian Empire, as with the founders of FTDNA, and MyDNA, and Adolph Hitler, the best way for freedom is speaking freely, and knowing that the other person, and even your ancestors are correct about your family. The new ones being born are already information sharing, just keep them alive so they can.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
