Douglas, for instance, having no Chief, can never be a Clan ?  .... Appoint Morton .

I have seen Durie's point about clans many times before, but he is not looking at reality, is he?

I hope folk will comment on this on Scot Clans' sister site, http://www.tartanfootprint.com/

I am somewhat confused by all this, is a golf shirt with the clan crest allowed to be worn? I ask as I have one as well as a cap with the Urquhart crest on it.

Tony, I don't think many will be paying too much attention to Durie!  I do see that the Duke of Hamilton, for example, might be a bit upset if someone were to wear his personal coat of arms, but most will be wearing something general, and cause no offence.

I am not sure about the Urquhart cap (!) but I am sure you look good in your shirt.

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
