Clan Douglas Gathering - 2014

Information

Clan Douglas Gathering - 2014

Plans are in hand to hold a Clan Douglas Gathering in Scotland in 2014.

The Gathering will be was held 30th June - 6th July 2014, following the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn

A range of activities are proposed. We welcome suggestions as the what and where these might be. Until numbers are known, events and activities cannot be firmed up, but there will include castle visits and opportunities to meet senior Douglas leaders (We have no Chief!).

This group has been established to enable ideas to be discussed, dates to be set, and an organising committee to be established.

So let us know what you think!

Douglas Clan Gathering in 2014

The Homecoming Scotland 2014 events program will be themed around ancestry and the Scottish Government's Years of Focus (food and drink, active, creative and natural). Making the announcement, Fergus Ewing, MSP, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism said "In 2014 Scotland will welcome the world as we stage two of the biggest sporting events - The Commonwealth Games and The Ryder Cup. This momentous year also sees Scotland's next year of Homecoming, giving people even more reason to be in Scotland and to extend their stay".

This is an opportunity for Clan Douglas to have a Scottish Gathering - the first ever. It might be an opportunity to launch a Clan Douglas Heritage Trust, to enable us to promote and advance the education of the public in the history, traditions and music of the Clan Douglas. It would seek to preserve and make widely known the enormous contribution that members of the Clan Douglas have made, and are still making, in politics, medicine, literature, music, sport, exploration and other forms of scientific endeavour, military campaigns and many other fields. It would ensure that their achievements are not forgotten, not only through the printed word but also through the preservation of manuscripts, artefacts, buildings and other tangible links. It also promotes the continuing contribution of Douglases in these areas.

Please let me know your views on a Clan Douglas Gathering, and what you would like to see happening at such an event. A daily programme of visits to castles, etc, has now been announced, but we still have to decide what evening events should happen.

2014 is also the anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, and the probable date of the referendum on Scottish independece.

If you can only make one day, make it the Saturday at Drumlanrig for the Clan Muster.

I also have the opportunity to come and it has been incredibly nice to be there. It's not so far from Norway, so I'll keep myself updated.
I do not have so many threads with my Mary Douglas b 1766 to 1836 and David Hastings snr yet, but I hope I can find out more gradually :-)

Dumfries will probably not be on the list, but Drumlanrig, which is nearby will be. Dumfries and Castle Douglas are certainly worth visiting.  If there are enough interested we could put together an itinerary for a group visit.

Update 26 June 2013:  I have included Lincluden (in Dumfries) and Threave Castle in the itinery.

Plans for the 2014 Clan Douglas Gathering are still on hold as we wait for clarification as to what is planned at a national level.

Bannockburn 700th – Saturday 21 June, 2014

This Pipefest does not look like a firm date yet, but something for us to consider before choosing our Gathering dates.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
